Utah Jazz vs. Memphis Grizzlies, 01/08/17 – Expert Prediction
Written by: George Middleton
Utah Jazz (22-15) at Memphis Grizzlies (23-16)
NBA: Sunday, January 8, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. ET
Line: Memphis -3
The Utah Jazz hit the road to take on the Memphis Grizzlies for a Sunday night matchup. The two teams have split their two meetings this season. In their most recent matchup on Dec. 18, the Jazz beat the Grizzlies 82-73. Gordon Hayward led the Jazz with 22 points and six assists. Memphis has lost two of their last three games while Utah has won four of their last six. The matchup features two of the top defensive teams in the league. Utah is first in points allowed (95.3 ppg) and Memphis is third (99.1 ppg). The Grizzlies are led by Marc Gasol and Mike Conley. Gasol leads the Grizzlies as he is averaging 19.8 points and six rebounds, and Conley is averaging 18.7 points and 5.9 assists. Gordon Hayward leads Utah with averages of 22.2 points and six rebounds.
Health a key in Utah
The Utah Jazz have the fifth best record in the Western Conference and the biggest reason is defense. Utah has succeeded despite being without key players for big parts of the year. Alec Burks who averaged 13.3 points a game last year has only played in two games as he has dealt with an ankle injury. George Hill has only played in 13 games as he has dealt with injuries. Hill is averaging 18.8 points and 4.2 assists this season. In those 13 games, the Jazz are 10-3.
The last player is Derrick Favors who has missed 15 games this year with a bone bruise in his left knee. Favors is averaging 8.6 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes this season. Even when Favors plays he can’t stay on the floor and has looked sluggish at times. It’s important for Utah to remain healthy as they look like a darkhorse in the Western Conference.
Grizzlies pull off upset against Warriors
The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Golden State Warriors 128-119 in overtime on Friday night. Memphis won the game despite trailing by 19 heading into the fourth quarter. Mike Conley led the Grizzlies with 27 points and 12 assists. Zach Randolph had 27 points (12/17 fg), 11 rebounds, and six assists off the bench. Both teams shot 49 percent from the field. Memphis had trouble containing Stephen Curry who went for 40 points and six assists. Marc Gasol wound up with 23 points and five rebounds.
Tony Allen finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and six steals. Troy Daniels added 12 points on 4-of-7 from 3-point range. The Warriors had 16 turnovers and the Grizzlies committed 12. Memphis improved to 10-9 on the road this season.
The Utah Jazz are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.
- 3-15 ATS in their last 18 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 vs. Western Conference.
The Memphis Grizzlies are:
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games playing on 1 days rest.
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. NBA Northwest.
- 12-4 ATS in their last 16 vs. Western Conference.
This contest should be an ugly low-scoring affair. Memphis has the homecourt which will prove to be large in this game. Look for Conley and Gasol to have a big game in this game. Memphis is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. NBA Northwest.
The pick: Memphis
