The Portland Trail Blazers travel to Staples Center to take on the Los Angeles Lakers. This is a big matchup for both teams as they are fighting with a handful of other teams for the eighth seed in the Western Conference. On Jan. 5, the Trail Blazers beat the Lakers 118-109. C.J. McCollum led Portland with 27 points and seven assists. The Lakers have won three of their last four games, and the Trail Blazers have split their last four. Portland is led by Damian Lillard who is averaging 26.6 points and 6.3 assists. Los Angeles has gotten terrific play from D’Angelo Russell and Julius Randle as of late. Russell is averaging 20.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists over the last five games. Randle is putting up 17 points, 9.4 rebounds, and six assists over the last five games.
Trail Blazers fall to Pistons in double-overtime thriller
The Portland Trail Blazers lost 125-124 to the Detroit Pistons in double-overtime on Sunday night. Portland lost despite two three-pointers in the fourth and in overtime by McCollum that tied the game with less than 25 seconds to play. McCollum led the Trail Blazers with 35 points and six assists. Allen Crabbe had a career-high 30 points on 12-of-15 shooting off the bench. The Trail Blazers shot 52 percent from the field and the Pistons shot 51 percent. Damian Lillard wound up with 20 points and nine rebounds. Portland had trouble containing Reggie Jackson who had 31 points.
Al-Farouq Aminu finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Mason Plumlee added eight points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. The difference in the contest was turnovers as Portland committed 19 and Detroit had only 10.
Lakers blow by Magic
The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 111-95 on Sunday night. Los Angeles took control in the second half when they outscored Orlando 49-35. Julius Randle led the way with 19 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. D’Angelo Russell had 17 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. The Lakers shot 48 percent from the field and the Magic shot 38 percent. Orlando out-rebounded Los Angeles 54-47 in the contest. Timofey Mozgov finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Brandon Ingram added 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the win. The Magic had 18 turnovers while the Lakers committed 13. Los Angeles improved to 10-10 at home this season.

Portland has the edge with Lillard and McCollum but it won’t be enough. Los Angeles has played well over the last week and they appear to have a lot of confidence. The Lakers nearly won in Portland last week look for them to get their revenge.
