Written by: George Middleton
New Orleans Pelicans (15-24) at Brooklyn Nets (8-29)
NBA: Thursday, January 12, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. ET
Line: New Orleans -5
The New Orleans Pelicans travel to Barclays Center to take on the Brooklyn Nets for a Thursday night contest. This is the first of two meetings between the two teams this season. New Orleans has won five of their last eight games, and Brooklyn has lost seven straight. Anthony Davis leads the Pelicans as he is averaging 29.1 points and 12.2 rebounds. It’s unclear if Davis will play as he dealing with a hip injury. Brook Lopez leads Brooklyn as he is averaging 20.1 points and five rebounds. The Pelicans are 21st in the league in offense (102.4 ppg) and the Nets are 16th in scoring (105.1 ppg). Can Lopez lead the Nets to a much-needed win?
Pelicans top Knicks
The New Orleans Pelicans beat the New York Knicks 110-96 on Monday night. New Orleans took control in the third quarter when they outscored New York 31-15. Anthony Davis led the Pelicans with 40 points (14/22 fg) and 18 rebounds in 29 minutes. Buddy Hield went for 11 points on 3-of-5 from 3-point range. New Orleans shot 48 percent from the field and New York was held to 42 percent. The Pelicans had trouble containing Brandon Jennings who had 20 points on 8-of-14 from the field.
Terrence Jones wound up with 11 points on 4-of-6 from the field in 14 minutes off the bench. New York out-rebounded New Orleans 45-40 in the game. The Knicks had 15 turnovers and the Pelicans committed 11. New Orleans is 5-13 on the road this season.
Nets fall to Hawks
The Brooklyn Nets lost 117-97 to the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night. Atlanta took control early on when they outscored Brooklyn 61-43 in the first half. Brooklyn had trouble containing Dennis Schroder with 19 points and 10 assists. Lopez led the Nets with 20 points on 8-of-14 from the field. Bojan Bogdanovic went for 16 points and six rebounds in the loss. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Atlanta shot 48 percent from the field and Brooklyn shot 40 percent.
Sean Kilpatrick added 14 points and five rebounds off the bench. The Hawks out-rebounded the Nets 53-48 in the game. Brooklyn fell to 7-12 at home this season.
The New Orleans Pelicans are:
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
The Indiana Pacers are:
- 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a double-digit loss at home.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games playing on 1 days rest.
- 2-5 ATS in their last 7 vs. NBA Southwest.
Even if Davis is out the Pelicans have enough talent to beat the Nets. Terrence Jones and Donatas Motiejunas will fill in nicely if Davis misses the game. New Orleans is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win.
The pick: New Orleans
