Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks, 01/12/17 – Prediction
Written by: Nikhil Kalro
Phoenix Suns (12-26, 19-18 ATS) vs Dallas Mavericks (11-27, 17-21 ATS)
NBA Global: Thursday, January 12 at 10.00 PM ET, Mexico City Arena, Mexico City
The Line: Phoenix Suns -1
The Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks, two teams in the lower echelon in the NBA, clash in the NBA’s global game in Mexico City in Thursday night. The Phoenix Suns challenged the champs Cleveland Cavaliers in their previous outing, but lost 120-116. The Mavericks were comfortably handled 101-92.
Suns look to put on show in Mexico
The Phoenix Suns are excited. Why shouldn’t they be? They’re just starting to put up the kind of performances that makes the NBA take notice. Now, they have the chance to showcase it to the world as the NBA heads to Mexico.
The Suns lost their 26th game of the season in 38 when the champs Cleveland Cavaliers struggled but got through to the win, 120-116. Eric Bledsoe scored 31 and Devin Booker managed 28 points. The game looked done when the Cavs raced away to a 16-point lead at halftime. They conceded 69 in the first half, the most they’ve allowed this season.
The Suns, however, bounced back in the third to tie the game. In the fourth, they trailed by one, but couldn’t take the lead. “I’m mad we lost but at the same time this is one of those games that was I guess a good loss,” Bledsoe said. “We competed with one of the top teams in the league. To be down like that and come back says a lot. We’ve just got to start playing like this night in and night out.”
Mavericks all but out of playoffs
The Dallas Mavericks entered the new year with new hope and aspirations. But for what? Their playoffs chase is all but over already and almost all cogs of their wheel are malfunctioning. The Mavericks were handled by the Minnesota Timberwolves 101-92 in their most recent game.
Harrison Barnes scored 30 points and Dirk Nowitzki managed 26 points with five made treys. The Timberwolves shot 56.3% from the field and Karl-Anthony Towns posted 34 points with 11 rebounds. “We were never able to control Towns, obviously,” Nowitzki said. “He got too deep some; just never really had an answer for him.”
Barnes has been the Mavericks’ shining light in a dark, gloomy season. He averages 20.8 points per game with a field goal conversion rate of 47.6%, the team’s leader in both statistics. The team’s offense has been woeful, putting up an average of 95 points a game, last in the NBA.
Phoenix Suns are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games playing on 3 or more days rest.
- 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 vs. Western Conference.
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 against NBA Southwest opponents
Dallas Mavericks are:
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 when their opponent allows 100 points or more in their previous game.
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 against NBA Pacific opponents
- 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games following a straight up loss.
The Dallas Mavericks have not had a good season. The Phoenix Suns haven’t either. The Mavericks have the edge in this one, though. Why? Experience. Nowitzki and Barnes are in form, Deron Williams is in and around. A game outside the USA may just lift them up for the occasion. The Suns will struggle to put up points against this Mavericks defense.
