Providence vs. DePaul, 01/10/17 - Preview & Prediction

Providence Friars (11-6, 9-8 ATS, 6-9-2 O/U) at DePaul Blue Demons (7-9 SU, 4-11 ATS, 9-6 O/U)

The Line:Providence -4.5
Providence has hit the skids as of late losing four of their last five games. They are sitting at 1-3 in the Big East and to say they have had a hard early conference season would be an understatement. In losing three games in Big East play they all came against team that were ranked in the top 20. Their offense is not a dynamic one, but their D is solid ranking 33rd in the nation only giving up an average of 64.4 ppg.
DePaul is in a tailspin, as they have lost their last five games and they were crushed in their last game facing a Seton Hall team that is unranked. The Blue Demons have struggled on both sides of the floor this season, but a couple of things they have going for them is that they are 7-3 at home and Providence is 0-4 on the road. The home team has covered the spread in five of the last six games between these Big East rivals.
Poor effort on both sides of the court
Providence lost their last game to Creighton 78-64 where they had a poor effort on both ends of the floor shooting only 38.8% from the floor and allowing the Bluejays to shoot 55.9%. The main reason it was not a HUGE blowout loss is that the Friars had 21 offensive boards and the Bluejays only had six. In the game Providence was ice cold from deep only hitting on 3 of their 19 3-pointers. Emmitt Holt had a good shooting game going for 17 points as well as grabbing seven boards, but the rest of the team could not shoot the pill. Rodney Bullock (17.2 ppg) leads Providence in scoring and in the loss to Creighton he stunk it up going for six points on 3/13 shooting and missed all four of his 3-pointers.
Blowout to forget
After giving top-ranked Villanova scare on the road and playing St. John’s close DePaul was blown out in their last game losing to Seton Hall 87-56. The Blue Demons were outscored by 21 points in the 2nd half and for the game they shot a paltry 37% from the floor while the Pirates shot 54.1%. It was a game to forget, to say the least, and they also committed 16 turnovers and hit a 3-pt FG% of 28.6%. Billy Garrett Jr. went for 22 points on 8/11 shooting, but he got almost no help as the only player that scored over nine points. Oh yeah the one player that did got nine points is season’s leading scorer Ed Cain, who was 3/12 from the floor. DePaul must play good D and keep this a low scoring game, as that is how they almost shocked Villanova in a recent game.

The Friars are winless on the road this season and while the home team has been THE bet in the last few seasons both of those things will change in this game. Providence will get the W and send DePaul to another loss.
