TCU Horned Frogs (12-3 SU, 8-5 ATS, 6-7 O/U) vs Texas Longhorns (7-8 SU, 8-6 ATS, 5-9 O/U)
When and Where: Wednesday, Jan. 11, 8:00 PM ET, Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX
When Texas hosts TCU on Wednesday night, two Big 12 teams will be looking to get over recent road losses. The Horned Frogs couldn’t handle West Virginia’s full court press. The Longhorns didn’t have enough offense to upset Iowa State. Texas has only lost once in their nine meetings since TCU joined the Big 12 in 2012.
Turnovers plague TCU
TCU simply didn’t have enough for then 7th-ranked West Virginia, going down 82-70 on the road. Both teams shot around 46 percent from the field, but the differences came in turnovers. The Horned Frogs let it go 18 times, which is a common theme for WVU’s opponents. The Mountaineers were able to get 20 more field goal attempts and capitalized on them. TCU wasn’t able to take advantage of a solid 17-for-21 from the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Alex Robinson (11.6 ppg, 5.2 apg) led the team in scoring with 17 points, but had a dismal day dishing the ball with only 2 assists against 5 turnovers. Junior guard Kenrich Williams (9.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg) struggled mightily from the field making just 3-of-14 and missing all four 3-pointers. Junior forward Vladimir Brodziansky (11.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg) was the only other Horned Frog to reach double-digit scoring with 14 points, and also grabbed 6 boards.
Texas also struggles with turnovers
Iowa State kept Texas at arms length after taking a 40-31 lead at halftime and eventually pulled out the 79-70 victory. The Longhorns actually shot better from the field at 52.9 percent and had a 35-29 advantage in rebounding, but 19 turnovers led to 14 more shot attempts for the Cyclones. Both teams also electrified from the perimeter with Texas making 8-of-16 3-pointers and ISU hitting 10-of-24. Four of the team’s five starters hit double digits while the bench was limited to three points.
Sophomore guard Kerwin Roach Jr. (11.6 ppg, 3.4 apg) has been holding his own since conference play began. He’s had four straight double-digit point performances and reached a season high 21 points and 5 assists to 3 turnovers. He made all four 3-point attempts. Freshman guard Andrew Jones (9.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg) went an efficient 5-for-7 from the field and finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds.
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall
- 7-0 on the under in their last 7 games on Wednesday
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games against teams with a losing road record
- 4-0 on the under in their last 4 games against teams with a winning record
Both teams find themselves in a desperate 1-2 situation in a fully-loaded Big 12 conference. It’s a must have for both teams as TCU wants to take their game to the next level and Texas is rebuilding with plenty of young players. We’ll side with the Horned Frogs do to their advantages on field goal efficiency and ball movement (17 assists per game compared to the Longhorns’ 11.5).
