Charleston vs. JMU, 01/12/17 – Prediction
Written by: Brian Spaen
Charleston Cougars (13-4 SU, 8-5-1 ATS, 6-7-1 O/U) vs James Madison Dukes (5-12 SU, 4-9 ATS, 6-7 O/U)
When and Where: Thursday, Jan. 12, 7:00 PM ET, JMU Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, VA
Line: Charleston -4
Charleston looks to stay undefeated in CAA play when it goes on the road and takes on a jumpstarted James Madison squad that’s turned around a horrible start to the season. The Cougars took down Hofstra last Saturday for its fifth straight win. The Dukes absorbed their first loss of conference action with a road defeat at Northeastern. Both teams split the season series last year with road victories.
Chealey dominates with season-high 31 points
Charleston is keeping up with the other strong teams in the CAA after a close 77-71 victory over Hofstra. Both teams shot well from the field, but the Cougars had the upper hand with a more efficient 9-of-15 3-pointers. They also were able to convert more free throws, making 14-of-19 on the night. It felt like a one man show with junior guard Joe Chealey (15.9 ppg, 3.1 apg) going nuts with a season-high 31 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. That included five makes from downtown.
Chealey continues to improve in conference action and is taking more attempts from 3-point range. Not to be overlooked, freshman guard Grant Riller (10 ppg, 1.4 rpg) checked in with a conference high of 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. While it was his best showing in CAA play, he’ll need to focus on improving other aspects as he matures. Riller didn’t record a rebound or assist and has five boards and two dishes to four turnovers in conference action.
Has James Madison been exposed?
James Madison started off conference play strong, but it suffered a setback against Northeastern with a 64-54 defeat. The Dukes actually scored 51.1 percent of their shots compared to their opponent’s 37.3 percent, but the difference was in two major areas. Northeastern made nine 3-pointers to JMU’s two and had double the free throw makes thanks to attempting 14 more in the contest. James Madison also turned over the rock 19 times. Senior forward Yohanny Dalembert (8.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg) actually carried the team off the bench with 16 points and 4 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough.
As thrilling as its been lately for a team that started just 2-11 entering CAA play, the writing may be on the wall. James Madison’s three victories were against teams that are a combined 1-10 in conference play entering Wednesday night. They’ve been able to get away with their dismal 64.8 points per game (325th nationally), but that trend won’t last.
- 7-1 ATS in their last 8 road games
- 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall
James Madison is:
- 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games overall
- 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a SU loss
James Madison didn’t get blown away at Northeastern, but there was enough to see a big difference between the two. A similar situation should happen on Thursday night. While JMU is certainly improving and will prove to be a tough opponent every night, Charleston has a big edge on defense to shut this team down.
Pick: Charleston -4
