ODU vs. Southern Miss, 01/12/17 – Prediction
Written by: Brian Spaen
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (5-10 SU, 4-6-1 ATS, 4-7 O/U) vs Old Dominion Monarchs (10-6 SU, 8-7 ATS, 4-11 O/U)
When and Where: Thursday, Jan. 12, 7:00 PM ET, Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, VA
Line: Old Dominion -17
Old Dominion will host Southern Miss on Thursday night in a matchup of Conference USA squads that are looking to make the next step. The Golden Eagles will hit the road after winning two of their last three games at home. The Monarchs are coming off of a victory over Western Kentucky. Southern Miss owns a 2-1 advantage in the three meetings they’ve had against Old Dominion.
Campbell flexes muscles with season-high point total
Southern Miss slowly pounded away at UTEP to eventually get the 73-65 victory that was only close thanks to a late rally by the Miners. The Golden Eagles capitalized on 7-of-17 shooting from 3-point range and had 14 steals that contributed to UTEP’s 16 turnovers. The Miners also didn’t do themselves any favors by going just 5-for-23 from downtown. Two of SMU’s loaded backcourt paved the way.
Senior guard Quinton Campbell (12.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg) was the star of the game with a season-high 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals. Campbell has now gone 16-for-25 from the field in his last two games. Sophomore guard Cortez Edwards (9.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg) backed him up with an efficient 7-of-9 from the field and had 17 points. Senior guard Khari Price (10.5 ppg, 3.5 apg) couldn’t carry a solid performance against UTSA going 0-for-8 from the field and finishing with one free throw. Price did have an improved four assists to two turnovers.
B.J. Stith shines again
Old Dominion responded to its tough overtime loss at Marshall with a 79-67 beating of Western Kentucky. The Monarchs came back with a vengeance in the second half and outscored their opponent by a 48-32 margin, fueled by 50.9 percent shooting and having a 42-30 edge on the glass. WKU couldn’t take advantage of six more free throw attempts and finished with 18 makes compared to ODU’s 19 freebies. Unfortunately, questions loom for the Monarchs.
B.J. Stith (9.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg) led the way for a second straight time with 22 points and 5 boards. Stith’s brother, Brandan (10.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg), didn’t play in the game due to an ankle injury and is doubtful for Thursday’s game. Ahmad Caver (12.7 ppg, 4.3 apg) was the second starter in double figures with 18 points and Zoran Talley (11.3 ppg, 3.2 rpg) came off the bench with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting.
Southern Mississippi is:
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games on Thursday
- 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against C-USA teams
Old Dominion is:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games on Thursday
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following an ATS win
Even without Brandon Stith’s valuable production, Old Dominion has an advantage in this matchup thanks to its stout defense holding teams to a paltry 59.1 points per contest (5th overall). While they should win this contest, all the points Southern Miss is receiving is hard to pass up when there will be limited scoring by both teams in this game. The safer bet is on the away side.
Pick: Southen Miss +17
