Texas A&M Aggies (8-4 SU, 4-8 ATS) vs. Kansas State (8-4 SU, 5-7 ATS)
NCAAF: Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 9:00 p.m. ET
Line: Texas A&M -2
In the Advocare V100 Texas Bowl, The 8-4 Texas A&M Aggies will be host to the 8-4 Kansas State Wildcats on December 28th. The Aggies ended the season on a sour note, losing their final game 39-54 to LSU. The Wildcats ended much sweeter with a 3 game winning streak, capped off by a 30-6 beat down on TCU.
K-State Relies Solely on Ground Game
The Wildcats avoided throwing the ball at all costs. There was a total of nine touchdown passes and just over 1800 yards through the season. These are incredibly low numbers. The team generated all of its offense on the ground, having 36 touchdowns but not a single 1000 yard rusher in their diverse ground attack. Both Jesse Ertz and Winston Dimel had at least 10 scores each. Dimel had just 92 total yards with his 12 scores. Their leading receiver, Byron Pringle, had just over 500 yards and only 3 touchdowns. Shut them down on the ground and this team will lose.
K-State won their final game with their typical approach of running down the opposition’s throat. They had 2 rushers with over 100 yards in Jesse Ertz and Justin Silmon. The team ran for a massive total of 336 yards, completely bulldozing TCU. They also threw in an 83 yard touchdown pass to Byron Pringle just to spice things up after showing their dominance on the ground.
Knight In Shining Armor?
The Aggies offense was led by quarterback Trevor Knight and running back Trayveon Williams. Knight threw for 2122 yards and 16 scores as well as rushing for an additional 594 yards and 10 touchdowns. Knight is a dynamic dual threat quarterback who defenses must make an effort to contain. Williams averaged seven yards per carry on his way to 1024 yards and 8 touchdowns. The leading receivers were Josh Reynolds and Christian Kirk, who caught for just over 800 yards each. Reynolds grabbed 10 touchdowns and Kirk had nine to make up the majority of the team’s 22 touchdowns through the air between them.
In their loss to LSU, the Aggies defense was shredded by LSU’s running back Derrius Guice, who ran for a school record 285 yards and quarterback Danny Etling who threw for 324 and a pair of touchdowns, adding up to just over 600 yards of offense as the Aggies were destroyed. One bright spot for the Aggies was Knight’s solid 3 touchdown passes he threw as he came back from a shoulder injury, but a solid outing by their quarterback wasn’t enough.
Texas A&M is:
- 0-5 ATS in their previous 5 games.
- 1-4 ATS in their previous 5 against Kansas State
Kansas State is:
- Total has gone over in four of their previous 5 games.
- Total has gone over in 5 of their previous 6 against Texas A&M.
Kansas State relies almost entirely on their ground game, and being so one dimensional is an issue. The Aggies have possibly the best defensive player in the nation in end Myles Garrett and he’s going to be all over the Wildcat running backs behind the line of scrimmage. The Aggies can throw the ball, run, and their quarterback is a dynamic threat. This should be a Texas A&M win.
Pick: Texas A&M -2
