North Carolina vs. Stanford, 12/30/16 – Prediction
Written by: Jeffrey Stevens
Stanford Cardinals (9-3 SU, 7-5 ATS) vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS)
NCAAF: Friday, December 30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. ET
Line: Stanford -2
The #18th ranked Stanford Cardinals will take the field against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Hyundai Sun Bowl on December 30th in El Pasco, Texas. The Cardinals will look to add on to their winning streak after beating up on Rice 41-17 on November 26. North Carolina will be looking to bounce back after a 28-21 loss to North Carolina in their season finale on November 25th.
Cardinals Finish Season With Five Consecutive Wins
Stanford was able to finish out the season with a five game winning streak after roughing up the Rice Owls 41-27 in their season finale. The Cardinals were able to go into halftime with a 20-3 lead and added to their score in the third quarter. They were kept off the score board in the final quarter, but had already accomplished enough for a dominating win. Stanford was able to accumulate a total of 534 yards in the game with 373 of them coming on the ground.
Stanford has been able to put up an average of 26.4 points per contest this season. It’s been no secret that they are a run first team, picking up 215.6 yards on the ground to go along with 158.5 through the air. Running back Christian McCaffrey has been the team’s work hoarse this season, running the ball for 1,603 yards and finding the end zone an impressive 13 times.
Tar Heels End The Year With Loss To In-State Rivals
The North Carolina Tar Heels ended the season on a sour not, losing to the North Carolina State Wolf Pack 28-21 at home. The Heels fell behind early and went into the locker room at halftime down 21-7. North Carolina put up 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, but the damage had already been done and it was a little too late. They were out gained 492 yards to 413 and lost the first down battle 20-24.
North Carolina was able to find the endzone for an average of 33.1 points per game this season. The offense was able to rack up 148.2 yards on the ground along with 294.2 through the air. Quarterback Mitch Trubisky was a mad man this season, tossing the ball for 3,469 yards and 28 touchdowns compared to just four interceptions. Elijah Hood was the teams leading rushing, galloping for 858 yards and crossing the goal lines eight times.
- 17-8 ATS in their previous 25 games.
- The over is 4-0 in their previous four games at a neutral site.
North Carolina is:
- 4-2 ATS in their previous 6 games.
- The total has stayed under in 7 of their previous 8 games.
North Carolina will have their work cut out for them on both sides of the ball. Yes, the Heels have been able to move the ball through the air this season, but the Cardinals have been strong against the pass all season. North Carolina has had some struggles on defense when it comes to stopping the run which could equal a field day for McCaffrey. I like the Cardinals minus the points in this one.
Pick: Stanford -2
