Kansas City Chiefs (11-4 SU, 8-7 ATS) vs. San Diego Chargers (5-10 SU, 7-8 ATS)
NFL: Sunday, January 1st, 2017 at 4:25 p.m. ET
Line Kansas City -4
The Kansas City Chiefs will be on the road this weekend to wrap up the regular season against the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The Chiefs were able to clinch a spot in the postseason last weekend with a 33-10 win at home against the Denver Broncos. The Chargers will be looking to put an end to a four game losing skid after falling in Cleveland to the Browns 17-20.
Kansas City Clinches Playoff Brith
The Chiefs will now need to decide whether they go full speed this week in San Diego or if they give their starters some rest after clinching a spot in the playoffs with a 33-10 win at home Sunday night against the Denver Broncos. Kansas City was able to go into the locker room at the half up 21-10 and scored 12 unanswered points through the second half just to add to the accomplishment. KC out gained Denver 484 total yards to just 246 and took the ball away for three turnovers in the game. Tyreek Hill was a stud in the game, picking up 95 yards and a touchdown on just six touches while Alex Smith tossed the ball for 244 passing yards, a touchdown, and a completed pass to the other team.
The Chiefs were able to put up an average of 23.5 points per game this season. The offense was able to pick up an average of 243.3 through the air while running the ball for 109.7 each contest. Kansas City has been stingy on the defensive side of the ball, limiting their opponents to an average of just 18.9 points per game. They allowed the other team to gain an average of 256.7 passing yards and 120.6 rushing per week this season
Chargers Bring Christmas To Cleveland
Somebody had to do it, why not the San Diego Chargers? The Lightning Bolts were the first team to loss against the Cleveland Browns this season, falling 20-17 on Christmas Eve. The loss made four in a row for San Diego who fell behind in the first half and went into the locker room at halftime down 17-10. The Chargers were able to pull with in three after a touchdown in the third quarter and a field goal by Cleveland, but that would be as close as things would get. Phillip Rivers had a solid game in the loss, connecting on 23 of 46 passes for 322 yards and two touchdowns with just one interception in the game.
San Diego has been able to score some points this year, finding the endzone for an average of 25.5 per game. They have been able to throw the for an average of 274.5 yards, but have only picked up 92.1 on the ground. On defense, the Chargers have given up an average of 25.7 per contest. The have allowed their opponents to gain an average of 263.5 through the air while running the ball for 97.6 per contest.
Kansas City is:
- 4-1 ATS in their previous 5 games.
- 5-0 ATS in their previous 5 games on the road.
San Diego is:
- 1-5 ATS in their previous 6 games.
- 5-15 ATS in their previous 20 games at home.
This game still has a lot of meaning for the Chiefs who have a shot at winning the AFC West. I the difference between entering the playoffs as a division champ or a wildcard team can be huge and I look for the Chiefs going at this one full speed in order to do their part. I am just not sure they do enough to cover the points on the road.
Pick: San Diego +4
The Chargers have a passing game and they can put some points on the board. The Chiefs have had some issues when it comes to stopping the run this year and if Rivers can get some help on the ground, this game could get up there in points. I like the over in this one.
Pick: Total Over 44.5
