Patriots vs. Texans, 01/14/17 - Expert Prediction
Written by: Alex Alarcon
Houston Texans (10-7) at New England Patriots (14-2)
Game Time: Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 8:15 pm (Gillette Stadium)
Line: New England Patriots -15.5
Coming up on Saturday, January 14 from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, the NFL is bringing us AFC Divisional Round playoff action as the Houston Texans visit the New England Patriots. The Patriots are the top seed in the AFC and need just two more wins to reach the Super Bowl.
So Long Raiders
Houston earned the trip to this game after posting a 9-7 record in the regular season to win the AFC South, then beating the Raiders 27-14 in the Wild Card Round last weekend. In that one, Texans QB Brock Osweiler went 14-of-25 for 168 yards, throwing for one touchdown and running for another.
This season, Osweiler led the Texans with 2957 yards passing, 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, while Miller put up 1073 rush yards and five touchdowns. Leading Houston in receiving this year was DeAndre Hopkins with 78 catches, 954 yards and four touchdowns.
On Sept. 22, they were shutout at New England, 27-0. Osweiler completed 24 of 41 for 196 yards with a pick. They were going up against third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who threw for just 103 yards.
Well Rested Champions
Over on the Patriots side, they cruised through the season on the way to a 14-2 record and yet another AFC East title. After a loss to the Seahawks on November 13, New England won their final seven games, including their most recent pair against divisional rivals New York and Miami. In those two games, the Pats dominated with a combined 76-17 score.
Leading the way as usual behind center this year is Tom Brady at QB, who put up 3554 yards, 28 touchdowns and just two picks for New England this year.
The Patriots’ leading rusher this season is LeGarrette Blount, with 1161 yards and 18 touchdowns, while Julian Edelman led the receivers with 98 catches for 1106 yards. Blount had 105 yards on 24 carries with two TDs in their win over Houston in September.
- Texans are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win.
- Texans are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- Texans are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win.
New England Patriots
- Patriots are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win.
- Patriots are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win.
- Patriots are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. AFC.
You won’t find a whole lot of people picking the Texans to win this game, as it would be nothing short of a total shock for New England to lose. The Patriots are playing at home and smoking hot on that winning streak, driven to prove themselves once again after Tom Brady’s suspension (which seems like a distant memory now).
Houston surprised a lot of people with that win last weekend, but expecting Osweiler to keep up with Brady here is simply too much. Although the line is huge, the Patriots aren’t going to let off the gas pedal and look good for a cover here.
I hope you love winning practically free money as much as I do. I'm a sports and analytical nerd that will give you the best picks for any game. I've worked on various websites in the sports handicapping industry along with years of covering NFL teams. Enjoy your win.
