Written by: Jason Green
Vancouver Canucks (21-17-2 SU 21-19 PL, 16-16 O/U) at Calgary Flames (19-18-3 SU, 21-19 PL, 16-19 O/U)
NHL: Saturday January 7, 2017 at 10 p.m. ET
The Line:Calgary -170/Vancouver +155 Total 5
The Flames are pretty hot, no pun intended, as of late, as they have won four of their last five games including their last two. In their four wins in five games they have scored 18 goals and given up only seven goals with their only loss in that span being a 3-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks. The Flames rank in the middle of the pack in the league in goals per game and goals allowed, which is not surprising since they are in the middle of the Western Conference race nine points behind the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Canucks are on fire, as they have won five in a row and that span has vaulted them to at least get in the playoff picture in the West. They have been consistent scoring three goals in each of their last four games and in that span they have given up six goals. Vancouver’s streak is all the more impressive since they do not rank in the op 20 in the league in goals scored per game or goals allowed.
A shutout is a shutout
OK, so the Canucks won their 5th in a row in a 3-0 shutout win over the Arizona Coyotes and while Arizona has the 2nd fewest points in the NHL a shutout is a shutout. In the game Vancouver only had two more shots (24-22) and Sven Baertschi, Brandon Sutter, and Bo Horvat all found the back of the net. GK Ryan Miller (11-10-1 2.65 GAA) was the big star of the game stopping all 22 Arizona shots and he had given up two goals in each of his last two games.
Horvat leads the team in points and The Sedin brothers have combined for 49 points and 19 goals this season. On the season the Canucks are 5-12-1 on the road.
Feeding on the bottom feeder
In their last game the Flames won 4-1 facing a Colorado Avalanche team that has the fewest points in the NHL. In the game the Flames were dominant with 37 shots on goals while the Avs only had 18. Four different players lit the lamp for Calgary in the game and GK Brian Elliot (8-9-1 2.89 GAA) crept close to getting to .500 with the win and he has been solid as of late giving up a total of nine goals in his last five starts. Johnny Gaudreau leads the team in points and the have six players that have at least 20 points, but only three that have scored double-digits in goals. Calgary is 10-10 at home this season.
The Vancouver Canucks are:
- 5-0 in their last 5 overall
- 5-0 in their last 5 vs. Western Conference
- 5-2 in their last 7 vs. a team with a winning record
The Calgary Flames are:
- 4-1 in their last 5 overall 10-1 in their last 11 vs. a team with a losing record
- 7-3 in their last 10 home games
The Canucks have won five in a row, but their last loss was to the Flames. Look for that to happen again, as on home ice Calgary will take this one.
I dig every sport and the NFL is my favorite. My team is the Redskins and my 2nd favorite is whoever is playing the Cowboys! I am a great handicapper and if you don’t believe me just ask. I don’t just write about betting on games I actually bet on them and I have done well, which is why it is a good idea to follow my picks.
