Calgary Comes Off a Statement Rivalry Win
Calgary enters the rematch with considerably more momentum after beating Edmonton 38-28 on Monday. The Stampeders entered the Labour Day Classic at 5-6 and had struggled at home, but they produced one of their better offensive performances of the season when they needed it.ย Scoring 38 points was particularly notable considering Calgary had failed to exceed 30 points in each of its previous several games. The Stampeders had also entered Monday with one of the CFL's higher two-and-out rates, making the offensive breakthrough against a strong Edmonton defense significant.
Calgary's challenge is proving that performance wasn't simply a one-game rivalry surge. The Stampeders now travel north on a short week and face an Edmonton team that will have immediate motivation after losing the first half of the home-and-home series.ย The first meeting also showed that Calgary can create enough offense to challenge Edmonton's improved defense. That makes the Stampeders dangerous if the rematch market gives them more than a field goal.
Edmonton Gets an Immediate Chance to Respond
Edmonton had been one of the CFL's strongest teams before Monday's setback. The Elks entered Labour Day at 8-3 and had produced one of the league's biggest year-over-year defensive improvements, allowing approximately 25 points per game.ย Their ground game has also been an important part of the formula. Edmonton entered the first meeting with one of the CFL's most dangerous rushing attacks, while Calgary had been surrendering a league-high 5.9 yards per rushing attempt.
That matchup advantage doesn't disappear because Calgary won the first meeting. Edmonton should again have opportunities to establish the run, extend drives and keep Calgary's offense on the sideline.ย The location also changes. Monday's game was played at McMahon Stadium, while Saturday's rematch takes place at Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton now gets the home-field advantage after losing by 10 on the road.
Before Monday's defeat, Edmonton had also demonstrated an ability to win close games. The Elks defeated Winnipeg 22-19 in their previous outing and had built an 8-3 record through their first 11 games.ย This therefore looks much more competitive than simply assuming Calgary will repeat what happened five days earlier.
Calgary Stampeders vs Edmonton Elks Picks and Prediction
Pick: Edmonton Elks -2.5 or Better
If Edmonton is available at -2.5 or better, I like the Elks to answer Monday's defeat. Calgary deserves credit for its 38-28 victory, but Edmonton entered that game with the better overall record and stronger defensive profile, and the Elks still have an appealing rushing matchup against Calgary's vulnerable run defense. The location also flips from Calgary to Edmonton. Rivalry rematches frequently create significant market reactions to the first result, and I don't want to overreact to one game after Edmonton built an 8-3 record beforehand. Take Edmonton if the spread is -2.5 or better.
Pick: Under 57.5 or Higher
Monday's 38-28 result produced 66 points, but I'm willing to come back on the Under if the rematch total is 57.5 or higher. Before that game, the Under had cashed in four consecutive meetings between these teams, and Edmonton entered Labour Day allowing only about 25 points per game. Calgary had also failed to exceed 30 points since Week 7 before suddenly scoring 38 on Monday. Edmonton's rushing attack provides another route toward a slower game because sustained ground possessions can reduce the total number of drives. I'm expecting a more controlled defensive response from the Elks rather than another game in the mid-60s. Take Under 57.5 or higher.
Final Picks: Edmonton Elks -2.5 or Better and Under 57.5 or Higher
