Calgary Survived, but the Defense Raises Questions

Calgary desperately needed Saturday’s victory and got it, but there was very little comfortable about the 40-38 final. The Stampeders entered as a substantial favorite against a winless Ottawa team and still needed every bit of their 40-point offensive performance to avoid what would have been a damaging home defeat.

The encouraging development was Calgary’s offense. One week after suffering a 53-16 defeat at Edmonton, the Stampeders responded by reaching 40 points. Calgary showed an ability to answer Ottawa repeatedly rather than allowing the Redblacks’ second-half surge to completely flip the game.

Defensively, however, there is a serious concern. Calgary has now allowed 53 and 38 points in consecutive games, a total of 91. Playing Ottawa again only seven days later means there are very few mysteries between these teams. Calgary has the better overall record, but laying a significant road number against an opponent that just scored 38 on this same defense would be difficult to justify.

Ottawa Has Its Best Opportunity Yet

Ottawa is still searching for its first victory at 0-13, but Saturday’s 40-38 loss may have been its most encouraging performance of the season. The Redblacks scored 17 points in the fourth quarter and came within two points of completing the upset in Calgary.

The offensive breakthrough is important because Ottawa had struggled to generate consistent scoring for much of the season. Producing 38 points on the road changes the equation for the rematch. Ottawa now gets Calgary at TD Place with direct knowledge of what worked offensively only one week earlier.

There is still a reason Ottawa is winless. The Redblacks have repeatedly failed to finish close games, and Calgary made enough plays to survive Saturday. But from a point-spread perspective, Ottawa becomes much more attractive at home if the market again prices Calgary as a comfortable favorite. The gap between these teams did not look large in Calgary.

Pick: Ottawa +6.5 or Better

Ottawa just went into Calgary and lost by two points despite entering as an 8.5-point underdog. Now the Redblacks get the rematch at home. Calgary has surrendered 91 points over its last two games and should not be trusted to create substantial separation from an Ottawa offense that just scored 38 against it. Calgary may again find a way to win, but Ottawa plus nearly a touchdown offers the stronger betting position.

Pick: Over 57.5 or Lower

The first meeting produced 78 points, and neither defense gave us much reason to expect a complete reversal seven days later. Calgary has allowed 53 and 38 in its last two games, while its own offense just reached 40. Ottawa should continue attacking the same weaknesses it exploited in Calgary. Even allowing for some natural scoring regression from the first meeting, a total below 58 leaves enough room for the over.
