Hamilton’s 37-25 loss to Montreal dropped the Tiger-Cats to 4-10 and continued a difficult stretch. The final score does not completely explain the defeat because Hamilton generated 381 yards of offense. The decisive issue was turnovers, with Montreal forcing six.

That distinction matters for this matchup. Hamilton’s offense demonstrated that it can move the football, but possessions mean very little if they end with giveaways. Against Edmonton, protecting the football becomes even more important because the Elks have shown the ability to turn favorable field position into points quickly.

Hamilton also faces a difficult situational challenge. Edmonton is coming off a loss after entering Week 16 on a four-game winning streak, so the Tiger-Cats are unlikely to encounter a complacent opponent. Hamilton needs a much cleaner performance than it produced against Montreal to remain competitive at Commonwealth Stadium.

Edmonton Looks to Start Another Winning Streak

Edmonton entered last weekend at 10-3 and riding a four-game winning streak before Toronto handed the Elks a 24-19 loss. The defeat dropped Edmonton to 10-4 but did little to erase what has been an impressive season. The Elks remain first in the West and have already secured their postseason position.

Commonwealth Stadium has been particularly important to Edmonton’s rise. Before the Toronto loss, the Elks had beaten Calgary 53-16, Winnipeg 22-19 and Toronto 42-12 in recent home games. The 53-point performance against Calgary demonstrated just how dangerous Edmonton can become when its offense creates early momentum.

Hamilton’s turnover problems present an obvious opportunity. Montreal forced six giveaways last week, and Edmonton should be aggressive in trying to create the same type of mistakes. The Elks do not necessarily need another 50-point performance to cover a moderate spread; controlling possession and turning one or two Hamilton turnovers into short-field scores could be enough.

Edmonton is coming off a loss, but the larger body of work strongly favors the Elks. They are 10-4, lead the West and have been extremely difficult to handle at Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton should respond strongly after the Toronto defeat, and I am comfortable backing the Elks if the eventual spread stays around one touchdown.

Pick: Under 57.5 or Higher

Hamilton accumulated 381 yards against Montreal but repeatedly sabotaged scoring opportunities with turnovers. Edmonton’s recent games have also shown that the Elks can win without needing a shootout; Toronto held them to 19 and Winnipeg previously scored only 19 in Edmonton.
