Montreal has now scored at least 34 points in five of its last six games, including performances of 46, 48, 44 and 37 points. That kind of production explains why the Alouettes remain on top of the East Division.

The season-long offensive numbers are equally impressive. Montreal ranks second in the CFL at 36.0 points per game and first with 430.4 total yards per game. The Alouettes average 332.7 passing yards and 106.7 rushing yards while converting 54.3% of their second-down opportunities. Montreal isn't dependent on one method of moving the football, and that balance becomes especially valuable against a BC defense that has been one of the league's strongest units.

The concern is Montreal's defense. The Alouettes allow 28.1 points and 378.3 yards per game, including 294.8 passing yards and 97.3 rushing yards. BC scored 30 points in Montreal last week and carried a nine-point advantage into halftime, so the Alouettes already know this isn't an opponent they can simply overwhelm. Montreal has the better record and the league's most productive offense, but the combination of BC's offensive ability and the change of venue makes this rematch considerably more difficult.

BC Looks to Turn the Rematch Around at Home

BC enters at 6-6 after having its five-game winning streak snapped in Montreal. The Lions had been one of the CFL's hottest teams before the 37-30 defeat and were in position to extend that streak after building a 23-14 halftime lead. The game changed dramatically during the third quarter, when Montreal scored 20 unanswered points. Despite the loss, BC demonstrated that it can move the football and score against the East Division leader.

The Lions average 29.1 points and 427.6 total yards per game, ranking second in the CFL in total offense despite sitting only sixth in scoring. BC generates 323 passing yards per game and owns the league's best rushing attack at 120.1 yards per contest. The Lions therefore possess the offensive balance necessary to challenge Montreal again. Their biggest issue has been converting all that yardage into points as efficiently as the Alouettes, who average nearly seven more points despite the two offenses producing almost identical total yardage.

BC's defense is what makes the home side especially appealing in the rematch. The Lions rank first in the CFL by allowing only 344.2 total yards per game and also own the league's No. 1 rushing defense at just 57.3 yards allowed per game. BC gives up 27.3 points per contest and has held opponents to a 45.8% second-down conversion rate. Montreal managed to overcome that defense last week, but repeating a 20-point third-quarter explosion at BC Place won't necessarily be easy. If the Lions turn more of their offensive yardage into touchdowns, they have a legitimate opportunity to split the home-and-home series.

If the conventional sportsbook market opens with BC +3.5 or better, I'll take the Lions. Montreal deserves to be respected at 10-2 and just beat this team 37-30, but that final score doesn't tell the complete story. BC led 23-14 at halftime before one disastrous third quarter changed the game, and now the rematch moves across the country to BC Place. The Lions are second in total offense, first in rushing offense, first in total defense and first in rushing defense. Montreal has been the more efficient team and could certainly win again, but getting more than a field goal with BC at home provides enough value. Take BC +3.5 or better.

Pick: Over 58.5 or Lower

I'll also target Over 58.5 or lower if that's where the conventional total lands. These teams combined for 67 points last Friday, and their offensive numbers provide plenty of support for another productive game. Montreal averages 36.0 points and 430.4 yards, while BC generates 29.1 points and 427.6 yards. The Lions scored 30 in Montreal despite being held to seven second-half points, and the Alouettes have reached at least 34 points in five of their last six games. BC's defense is good enough to make a total in the 60s much less appealing, which is why 58.5 is my cutoff. At that number or lower, there are several realistic paths to another game reaching the low 60s. Take Over 58.5 or lower.
