Chicago White Sox vs Cleveland Guardians Pick and Prediction September 14th, 2025
Cleveland looks to make a last-minute chase at a wild card spot as they host the Chicago White Sox on Sunday at 1:40 p.m. EST in Progressive Field. Check out our Chicago White Sox vs Cleveland Guardians pick and prediction here!
Chicago remains firmly in the bottom of the American League with a 57-91 record and yet they have gone 7-3 in their last ten games. Meanwhile, the Guardians are 76-71 and trailing the final wild card spot held by the Mariners by 3.5 games. Texas is also ahead of them in the wild card race, meaning Cleveland would have to leapfrog both teams just to get a spot in the playoffs. Stranger things have happened, so we can't count them out yet. Cleveland is a -165 money line favorite while the total is set at an even eight runs. Can the White Sox continue to surprise with a win on the road?

Chicago Winning?
Chicago was shut out by the Guardians in their last effort, losing by a score of 4-0. The bottom two hitters in Chase Meidroth and Will Robertson, had a hit each, but nobody else was able to do anything on offense. Martin Perez started the game for Chicago, and he gave up three runs on four hits in 6.2 innings pitched, striking out three and walking two. Steven Wilson pitched the final 1.1 innings and gave up a run on two hits.
Nothing could be done to move the needle for the White Sox, really, but they managed to sell a couple of pieces in an effort to rebuild. Tristan Gray was traded from Chicago to the Rays for cash and Austin Slater was traded to New York for Gage Ziehl. However, the biggest move the White Sox made was sending Adrian Houser to the Tampa Bay Rays for Curtis Mead, Duncan Davitt, and Ben Peoples. It was beyond obvious that Chicago had to sell this deadline, but they are in the midst of a long rebuild. It will take time before people see the vision.
Yoendrys Gomez is the projected starter for the Chicago White Sox in this game. So far, he has a 3-2 record with a 5.05 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP through 18 appearances (six starts). He has one save along with 45 strikeouts through 46.1 innings pitched. Gomez struggled mightily in May with a 14.73 ERA, but has gotten better as the year has gone on with a 3.86 ERA in August and a 4.50 ERA in September. While there are no playoff implications for Chicago, this could be Gomez's chance to prove he can be valuable not only on the roster, but as a rotation piece as well.

Cleveland Clinging to Hope
Cleveland earned a crucial 4-0 win over the White Sox in their latest contest. Angel Martinez and David Fry had a solo shot each, and Nolan Jones added a pinch-hit RBI. Austin Hedges picked up the other RBI and Tanner Bibee went the full nine innings, giving up no runs on two hits while striking out ten and walking nobody.
In typical Cleveland fashion, the Guardians made only quiet moves. In fact, Cleveland didn't do much at the deadline, trading Shane Bieber to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Khal Stephen on the deadline day. They also sent Paul Sewald to the Tigers for future considerations. Most of Cleveland's roster is under contract for not only the remainder of this year, but next year as well. The offseason might be a bit more exciting for the Guardians, but they should feel happy still in the hunt at this point.
Slade Cecconi will get the nod for the Guardians as they desperately cling to a chance at a playoff berth. So far on this year, the righty is 6-6 through 20 starts and has 94 strikeouts in 115.1 innings pitched. He has a 4.45 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP as well, which is below his career averages. While he started poorly in May with a 5.28 ERA, Cecconi recovered in June with a 2.70 ERA and a 3.93 ERA in July. He faded back to a subpar standard in August, however, with a 6.31 ERA and he's been average in his first couple starts in September. Cleveland needs him to do well in this one if they are to have any shot of October baseball.
White Sox vs Guardians Pick
Spread Pick for White Sox vs Guardians
- Guardians Money Line (5 units)
Cleveland should have much more desire to win this game, as they are clinging to a chance at a playoff spot and they need every win they can get. The Guardians are the better team on paper, and they have won eight of their last ten against Chicago. The White Sox are 25-49 on the road this year and Gomez has yet to pass five innings in each of his last five starts. I don't trust the bullpen of the White Sox to lock it down should the worst happen and they have a lead.
Over/Under Pick for White Sox vs Guardians
- Under 8 Runs (4 units)
This one is tricky, as both starters have had recent outings of success and outings of poor performance. However, I'm sticking with the trends here, as the last two games and three of their last four games have hit the over. Cleveland in particular, has hit the under in eight of their last ten games. Chicago is averaging just over four runs per game while Cleveland is averaging even less than that. Both teams have hit the under in the majority of their contests and I suspect Cleveland will look to lock the game down with a strong bullpen should they have a lead through five or six innings.
