Ariizona State vs. Hawaii prediction

The Sun Devils take a nice trip before the holidays in this Arizona State vs. Hawaii prediction. The Sun Devils (3-1) will be travelling to Honolulu to take on Hawaii (4-1) on Thursday at 11:59 a.m. ET in a non-conference matchup. Arizona State and Bobby Hurley are attempting to rebound from a 13-20 season, where they finished 4-16 in the Big 12. Hawaii had their own issues last season, going 15-16 overall and 7-13 in the Big West. Keep reading for more on this ASU vs. Hawaii prediction and other top College Basketball picks from Stat Salt.

Hurley is on the hot seat

The Sun Devils have started the season fairly strong, going 3-1, but beating Southern Utah, Utah Tech, and Georgia State is not going to be enough to silence the critics for Hurley, who is entering his 11th season at 168-151 in Tempe. ASU had one big matchup thus far and it came against No. 19 Gonzaga on Nov. 14. The Sun Devils fell in that game 77-65 as a 14-point dog. Hurley picked up a technical foul in that game, and the Sun Devils went through a five+ minute drought where they didn't hit a shot. They bounced back on Nov. 17 with a 75-62 home win over Georgia State 75 62 as an 18-point favorite. Maurice Odome led the Sun Devils with 24 points and nine assists.

Odum is a 6-1 point guard from Pepperdine, who ranked fourth in the nation in assists per game with the Waves, with 7.7 assists per game. He's averaging 14.8 points and 7.5 assists this season, shooting 39.3% from the field and 11 of 27 (40.7%) from 3-point range. Center Massamba Diop (7-1. 230) adds 14.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game with 1.8 blocks. KenPom has Arizona State ranked at 88th, but just 112th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency.

Key Injury Report for Arizona State:

  • G Adante' Holiman (elbow) is questionable. Averaged 16.0 points per game for Georgia Southern last season. Has yet to play this season.

Hawaii off to a nice start

The Rainbow Warriors also played Utah Tech in their last game (68-62 win), but this will be their first true test of the season. It's not even important to list their opponents. Their strength of schedule is listed as 359th out of 365 teams. They've also won all four games at home. Last Sunday, they did not cover the 16.5 points against Utah Tech, but they got the 6-point win. Dre Bullock led Hawaii with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, but also had four of the Rainbow Warriors' 18 turnovers.

Evan Ganot is in his 11th season with a 175-118 record, but is coming off a 7-13 season in the Big West with two starters returning. Bullock is a 6-6 transfer from South Dakota, who is on his fourth school after starting his career at Louisiana Tech, before moving to Niagara. He's averaging 12.6 points per game and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 42.6% from the field and 27.3% from beyond the arc. Hawaii does have some size led by Isaac Johnson (7-0, 240), a Utah State transfer, who leads the team with 14.8 points per game and 9.2 rebounds. KenPom has Hawaii ranked 93rd overall, 182nd in Adjusted Offense, and 28th in Adjusted Defense.

Key Injury Report for Hawaii:

  • F Tanner Cuff (knee) is out. Averaged 8.8ppg, 6.2 rpg and 3.2apg for Evansville last season.

Spread pick for Arizona State vs. Hawaii

Arizona State vs. Hawaii prediction

  • Hawaii to cover (4 units)

It's never easy to win in Hawaii. There are many distractions, and while Arizona State may have more talent, Hawaii has the size to compete with a Big 12 school (not a very good one). Hawaii's defense, while against mid-majors thus far, has been excellent. Ganot has brought in some talent to help on that side of the floor, which certainly was poor last season (260th in AJD on KenPom last season). Take the Rainbow Warriors to cover at home.

  • Under (4 units)

Both teams are in the low 100s in tempo. but for Hawaii to win this game, they're going to need to be more methodical against a Big 12 team. Hawaii has held teams to just 38% from the field and 28.2% from long range. Arizona State has gone under in all four games they've played and six of seven going back to last season. Hawaii has gone under in three straight and four of five games.
