#14 Razorbacks Smash Jaguars, Start 1-0

This is the second season of the John Calipari era in Fayetteville, and his Arkansas Razorbacks are looking to build on a 22-14 (8-10 SEC) mark from last year. They made a push to the Sweet Sixteen in the big dance. As for the new campaign, the SEC media poll projects that the Hogs will finish fifth in the conference standings. The sports betting market issues Arkansas the third-shortest price (+500) to win the regular-season conference title. G Karter Knox (8.3 PPG, 3.3 RPG in 2024-25) and G D.J. Wagner (11.2 PPG, 3.6 APG) were named to third-team preseason SEC honors. Knox missed the season-opening win over Southern (109-77) with a toe injury.

Arkansas smashed Southern 109-77 in their opener on Monday, covering the 26.5-point spread with relative ease. The Razorbacks held edges in field goal rate (50.7% to 39.1%), turnovers (9 to 12), and rebounding (45 to 37), while the Jaguars were better in three-point shooting (44.4% to 35.7%). Individually, Trevon Brazile paved the way with a double-double, adding 25 points and 11 rebounds. Darius Acuff Jr. added 22 points on an 8-13 (61.5%) shooting night.

  • Last season, Arkansas scored 76.8 points per game, which was the 75th-best mark among D1 schools.
  • The offense shot 46.2% from the field (74th) and 32.7% from three-point range (230th).
  • Defensively, they were 18th in adjusted defensive efficiency, conceding 95.1 points per 100 possessions.

#22 Spartans Handle Raiders 80-69

Longtime coach Tom Izzo is back in charge in East Lansing this season, and he’s looking to build on an Elite Eight run for his Michigan State Spartans last season. So far, Sparty is out to a 1-0 start, as they cruised past Colgate in an 80-69 home affair on Monday. The expectations are lofty, per usual. The preseason media poll predicts that Michigan State will finish sixth out of 18 teams in the Big Ten. The Spartans didn’t have a single player named to the preseason Big Ten team.

Michigan State closed as a 22.5-point home favorite last time out against Colgate, so they failed to cover in the 11-point victory. Statistically, the Spartans won the turnover battle (10 to 13) and were better in rebounding (47 to 25), while the Raiders out-shot them from both the field (47.4% to 41.7%) and from three-point range (37.9% to 28.6%). Jaxon Kohler led things for MSU, posting a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Jeremy Fears Jr. scored 14 points while dishing out a team-leading 10 assists.

  • Michigan State is coming off of a season where they tallied 77.7 points per game (61st).
  • The Spartans shot 45.8% from the field (92nd) and hit 31.1% of their triples (319th).
  • On the defensive side, they were fourth in adjusted efficiency, allowing 90.4 points per 100 possessions.

Arkansas vs. Michigan State Pick

Spread Pick for Arkansas vs. Michigan State

  • Michigan State Spartans -1.5 (-110) (5 units)

This game is going to be electric, but when the dust settles, I ultimately think it’ll be Michigan State that secures the win and covers the spread. For starters, Sparty is 17-1 SU in its last 18 home games.

As for Arkansas, they missed one of their key guards, Karter Knox, last game due to a toe injury. The Hogs are going to need as much offensive firepower as they can get, and if he’s unable to go or not 100%, then it could be tough sledding for their offense. Arkansas is running into a Michigan State defense that finished top-five in adjusted defensive efficiency last season. Ultimately, I agree that this game should be priced as a pick ‘em, but I’m going to play it safe and ride with the home team to grind out an ugly, low-scoring win.

Over/Under Pick for Arkansas vs. Michigan State

  • Under 155.5 (-110) (5 units)

This total is way too high in my opinion. I think it should be around the 145-point range, as a 75-72 final seems more appropriate. I don’t think either team is set to hit the upper 70s.

One of the big issues with Sparty last season was their inability to hit the three-ball. They finished 319th in three-point shooting (31.1%). Arkansas was also just 230th (32.7%). Factor in that we have a couple of top-20 defenses from a year ago, and I really think the offensive struggles are going to be present. The under is 12-3 in Michigan State’s last 15 games, and that’s a trend that I like to continue on Saturday night in East Lansing.
