Bluejays have to replace Kalkbrenner
Creighton has to replace 7-foot Ryan Kalkbrenner, who left for the NBA's Charlotte Hornets. He was an imposing player on defense who won the Big East Defensive Player of the Year for four years. In the opener against South Dakota last Wednesday, sophomore Jackson McAndrew (6-10, 225) had 13 points and seven boards, while Owen Freeman (6-10, 240) led the way with 19 points and four rebounds off the bench. Freeman is a very talented transfer from Iowa, who led the Hawkeyes with 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds last season in 19 games as he battled injuries.
They might not have the rim protector that Kalkbrnner was, but they have six players listed at 6-foot-10 or taller. Nik Graves, who had 15 points in the opener, is a Charlotte transfer who averaged 17.5 points per game last season and will run the point. He added five assists and three steals, but also turned the ball over three times in the opener. Guard Josh Dix, another Iowa transfer, shot 41.9% from beyond the arc in three seasons with the Hawkeyes.
Last season, the Bluejays struggled with turnovers, ranking 351st with -4.3 per game, and shot 47.7% from the field (34.5% 3pt).

Key Matchups for Creighton vs. Gonzaga
Ike leads Zags over Sooners
Senior big man Graham Ike (6-9, 250) scored 19 points, grabbed 11 boards and dished out four assists to lead Gonzaga over Oklahoma 83-68 from Spokane last Saturday. Tyon Grant-Foster (6-7, 220) added 14 points and seven boards. Grant-Foster is a former WAC Player of the Year, who comes from Grand Canyon and averaged 17.4 points per game in his two-year career. The Zags defense was on point as they forced 16 turnovers and held the Sooners to 40% shooting from the field.
Gonzaga returns just one starter from last season's 26-9 squad that finished 14-4 in the WCC. Last season, they ranked second in the NCAA with 86.4 points per game and shot 50.1% from the field (2nd). But that will be difficult to duplicate with Ryan Nembhard (10.5ppg, 9.8apg) and Khalif Battle (13.6ppg) gone. Junior Braden Huff (6-10, 250) is another key returning along with Ike (17.3ppg, 7.3rpg), who averaged 11 points per game last season. Senior guard Adam Miller (6-3, 190) comes in from Arizona State, along with Grant-Foster along with Virginia transfer Jalen Warley (6-7, 205), who had 13 points and eight rebounds against Oklahoma.
Key Injuries and Analysis
Creighton:
- G Jason Green (concussion) is questionable. The 6-8 guard averaged 4.9ppg and 3.2rpg last season. Had 19 points vs UConn in the Big East Tournament.
Gonzaga:

Creighton vs. Gonzaga Prediction
Pick and Spread for Creighton vs. Gonzaga
- Creighton +10 (4 units)
I'm not convinced about either team right now with so many new players. However, Creighton is well-coached by Gregg McDermott so his teams are going to play the same system. They can run the floor and play at a fast pace if necessary. Gonzaga has looked good thus far, but there is a major concern about them and it's their three-point shooting (29.5%). They were a solid but unspectacular 35.4% from beyond the arc last season. Creighton may miss Kalkbenner, but they have a bunch of 6-foot-10 guys to match up with Ike and Huff. Gonzaga should win this, but I don't see them covering.
Final Score Prediction
- Gonzaga 78-Creighton 75
Total Pick for Creighton vs. Gonzaga
- Under 161.5 (4 units)
Gonzaga is 149th in pace of play after two games. Creighton went under in their first game and both of Gonzaga's games went under. The loss of Nembhard is a tough one because he averaged nearly double digits in assists last season. The Zags have gone under in six of their last nine games in the regular season and eight of 11 overall, counting this season.
