George Washington vs VCU Game Preview and Analysis

George Washington

George Washington has shown flashes, but it has not put together consistent A-10 basketball. The Revolutionaries did get past Rhode Island and George Mason at home last week, but the road story remains ugly. They have lost five straight conference road games and have not shown the ability to close against quality teams away from D.C.

That matters a lot tonight because this is not a soft landing spot. VCU is playing its best basketball of the season, and the Rams are doing it with defense, not just pace. For George Washington to cover, it needs to avoid long scoring droughts and handle VCU’s pressure without giving away empty possessions.

VCU

VCU looks like the best remaining non-Saint Louis at-large hope in the A-10, and it is easy to see why. Phil Martelli Jr has this team rolling with nine straight wins, and five of those wins came on the road. That includes an impressive trip across town to Richmond last weekend.

The most important change has been on defense. Earlier in the season, VCU was involved in several shootouts. Over this nine-game win streak, the Rams are allowing just a tick above 69 points per game. They have only really been forced to take a deep breath once, at scrappy Fordham.

VCU still has offense when it needs it. The Rams average 84 points per game and have multiple ways to score. Terrence Hill Jr continues to set the tone. He scored 20 points in the 78-67 win over Richmond, and his ability to make smart decisions keeps VCU from getting sloppy when the pace picks up.

This is also a strong situational spot for VCU. They are back home at the Siegel Center, where their defense tends to look even sharper. The only concern I can find is the possibility of looking ahead to the Saint Louis rematch on Friday. But with at-large hopes still on the line, I do not expect Martelli Jr to let the focus slip.

The market is also interesting. The public is loading up on George Washington in the spread splits, but the line has stayed firm at VCU -6.5. That tells me the sharper side is not scared of the Rams laying points.

Key Injuries and Notes - GW and VCU

  • VCU has won nine straight games entering this matchup.
  • VCU is allowing just a tick above 69 points per game during its nine-game win streak.
  • George Washington has lost five straight conference road games.
  • George Washington is 7-1 to the under in its last eight games.
  • VCU is 6-2 to the under in its last eight games.
  • The total has dropped from 163.5 to 162.5.
  • Public betting shows heavy support for George Washington on the spread.
  • Public betting shows 100 percent of total tickets and money on the over.

Final Score Prediction

I expect VCU to control this game with defense, especially in the middle portions where George Washington has struggled to stay steady on the road. The Rams do not need a perfect offensive night to cover, because their pressure and discipline should create separation.

  • Projected Final Score: VCU 82, George Washington 74
