Georgetown aiming for big things
Following a horrendous first season at the helm, Ed Cooley was able to get his Hoyas to bounce back for 18 wins and a CBC bid last season, and got them off on the right foot with a win in their season opener on Monday.
The Hoyas, selected sixth in the Big East Preseason Coaches’ Poll, are working with 10 returning players from last season, so another step forward for the program is the expected outcome for this season. They opened the season with their offense shooting 43.1% from the field and scoring at least 42 points in each half. Malik Mack, who averaged 12.9 points per game for the Hoyas last season, scored 11 points and had 4 assists versus Morgan State. Arizona transfer KJ Lewis scored a team-high 14 points in his Georgetown debut. The junior guard averaged 10.8 points per game in a mostly reserve role with the Wildcats last season.
Georgetown is looking to improve on an offense that averaged 72 points last season on 44.2% shooting. They capped their preseason with a nice win over No. 9 Kentucky on the road, scoring 84 points in the process. They do need to work on their three-point shot or take fewer of them. The Hoyas were just 4-26 from long range on Monday. They also won the rebound battle, 40-37, behind the efforts of 7-foot Aussie Julius Halaifonua. The sophomore also had a block and a steal in Monday’s win.

Team notes
- Georgetown emptied its bench on Monday and got 41 points from the reserves.
- Mack scored in double digits in 21 of 32 games last season.
- Lewis was selected to the Preseason All-Big East Second Team.
- The Hoyas added six players, all from power conference schools, via the transfer portal in the offseason.
Maryland sporting new shell
New head coach Buzz Williams earned a win in his first game as the bench boss for the Terrapins. The head coach is coming off three straight NCAA Tourney runs with Texas A&M, which had won over 20 games in four straight seasons under his tutelage.
The transfer portal spun the Terps around, with only one returning player returning to the mix. A 27-win team a year ago, the Terps could sneak up on folks as they were selected 13th in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Williams won’t be starting at zero as four players came over from A&M with him, including forward Pharrell Payne, who dropped a team-high 21 points on 75% shooting. The team shot 45.5% against Coppin State, hitting 10 points in their season-opening win. Kansas transfer David Coit, who came into the season averaging 13 points per game in his collegiate career, came off the bench and hit three threes, grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 4 assists, and had 2 steals in his Maryland debut.
Last year’s Maryland squad was third-best in the Big Ten, scoring 81.1 points per game, while also sitting third on the defensive end, allowing 67.2 points per game. The A&M defense that Williams coached last season allowed just 68.7 points per game, so they’ll be hard to get past once again. On top of all of the transfer talent that came to town, a pair of freshman starters, Darius Adams and Andre Mills, have many excited as well. The duo combined for 29 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
Team notes
- The Terrapins went five deep on their bench and added 19 points.
- Payne and Mills had 6 rebounds apiece to lead the team in the season opener.
- Maryland went 23-25 from the free-throw line on Monday.
Georgetown vs. Maryland predictions
Spread Pick for Georgetown vs. Maryland
- Georgetown +8 (5 units)
These two teams last met in 2016 when Maryland eked out a one-point victory on the road as +5.5 underdogs. Given where we are in the season and the uncertainty of what teams are going to do, especially those who are nearly all new, this spread seems a bit high. Georgetown, while maybe not in the upper echelon of schools, should most certainly be a tournament contender this season if it can stay on track. They have solid returners and solid transfers, plus Cooley is now in his third year at the helm and much more comfortable with the expectations that come with the gig. That’s not to say that they are going to go into College Park and upset the Terps. But this should be a closer game than the number attached. Maryland is going to get defensive, and the Hoyas can play that style of basketball without hesitation.
Take Georgetown getting the points.
Over/Under Pick for Georgetown vs. Maryland
- Under 148 (5 units)
Both teams were able to eclipse 80 points in their respective season openers. Both games came against mid-majors, so this will be the first real test for both sides. Last season, Georgetown was middle of the road with their tempo, ranking 117th in the KenPom ratings. Maryland was 66th last season in tempo, but Texas A&M was 215th and that should be closer to what we get out of these seasons' Terps with Williams at the helm. The Maryland head coach, noted above, likes to play hard-nosed defense, which will be a new look for the Terrapins. As a member of the Big East, Georgetown is always down for banging around and getting dirty. I think these two have a feeling-out period early as well. The under is 2-1 in the last three meetings.
Take the under.
