Kansas vs Oklahoma State Game Preview and Analysis

Right or wrong, all eyes in Lawrence are on freshman Darryn Peterson. He missed his 11th game of the season against Arizona with an illness, then returned Saturday and struggled against Iowa State. Peterson scored 10 points in 23 minutes with no rebounds, no assists, and three turnovers. Over his last five games, he has just three total assists.

That matters because Oklahoma State plays at a top-15 pace and has one of the worst defenses in the Big XII. On paper, this looks like a spot where Kansas should score at will. But if Peterson is not fully engaged, the Jayhawks’ offense does not always take full advantage of fast opponents.

The Cowboys want to play fast and downhill, getting to the rim and limiting three-point attempts. Arizona plays a similar style. Kansas just beat Arizona last Monday, so the Jayhawks’ defense got a good warm-up for this type of attack.

When I look at the total, I see a mismatch between history and the current number. The last seven meetings between these teams have averaged 146.7 points. Now we are looking at a number in the mid-150s. That is a big jump.

Recent trends also point Under. Six of Oklahoma State’s last eight games have stayed Under. Seven of Kansas’ last nine games have stayed Under. Even with Oklahoma State pushing pace, Kansas has shown it can defend in transition and force half-court possessions.

Unless Peterson suddenly flips the switch and dominates, I do not see this turning into a 160-point shootout. Kansas should control enough stretches to win and cover, but I expect defensive stretches and cold spells that keep this below the total.

Key Injuries and Notes KU and OKST

  • Darryn Peterson missed a recent game with an illness and struggled in his return.
  • Peterson has only three assists over his last five games.
  • Kansas recently beat Arizona, a team with a similar fast style to Oklahoma State.
  • Oklahoma State plays at a top-15 pace in the country.

Final Score Prediction

Kansas 78, Oklahoma State 70
