Michigan State vs Wisconsin Game Preview and Analysis

Michigan State

Michigan State is coming off a strong win at Illinois on Tuesday, and that game matters for two reasons. First, it was a big road win in the Big Ten. Second, it showed what the Spartans look like when Jeremy Fears Jr. is locked in.

Fears scored 26 points in that Illinois win, and that kind of scoring pop is huge for a team that has not always been smooth offensively. The Spartans have also been playing in higher-scoring games lately, which is why the over trend has been showing up in the numbers.

But I also have to acknowledge that Michigan State has been a little chaotic. Fears has had sportsmanship issues that were called into question in back-to-back games, including an incident against Minnesota that earned him a technical foul. There was also tension after the January 30 game with Michigan, where Fears and Dusty May accused each other of dirty play.

That does not automatically mean Michigan State plays worse, but it does tell me this team has been emotional and volatile lately. Sometimes that is good. Sometimes it leads to sloppy possessions and foul trouble.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin is one of the most impressive teams in the conference right now, and they have the wins to prove it. The Badgers own road wins at Michigan and Illinois, and they have won eight of their last ten games.

The biggest difference in this Wisconsin team is the offense. Greg Gard has completely moved on from the old slow-paced identity. This is not the Dick Bennett grind. This is not the Bo Ryan molasses swing offense. This is a team that is scoring at better than 83 points per game.

The portal additions matter, especially Nick Boyd. He ranks among the Big Ten’s scoring leaders at 20.2 points per game and gives Wisconsin a pure point guard they did not have a year ago. Pairing Boyd with John Blackwell, who is scoring 18.7 points per game, gives Wisconsin a perimeter combo that can beat you in multiple ways.

From a betting perspective, this is why I like Wisconsin in the game script even though the public is all over Michigan State. Wisconsin is the more stable offense right now, and that matters in a tight spread game.

As for the total, I am comfortable leaning over. Wisconsin has gone over in its last four games, and Michigan State is 6-3 to the over in its last nine. When both teams are trending that direction, I am not trying to get cute.

Key Injuries and Notes (MSU vs WIS)

  • Wisconsin brought in four seniors from the portal, including Nick Boyd, who is averaging 20.2 points per game.
  • John Blackwell is averaging 18.7 points per game for Wisconsin.
  • Wisconsin is scoring at better than 83 points per game this season.
  • Michigan State just beat Illinois on Tuesday behind 26 points from Jeremy Fears Jr.
  • Jeremy Fears Jr. has had sportsmanship issues in back-to-back games, including a technical foul against Minnesota.
  • Michigan State and Michigan had postgame accusations of dirty play after their January 30 matchup.
