Michigan staying alive
The Wolverines were opening up their Las Vegas showcase with a late-night tilt on Monday versus San Diego State. They’ve been clean through four games, though their two matchups versus power schools were won by a combined five points. In their win over Middle Tennessee, Yadel Lendeborg scored a season-high 25 points on 9-12 shooting, while also grabbing 12 rebounds. The senior forward had a team-high 15 points per game to lead an offense averaging 89.8 points a night, fourth best in the Big Ten. The team is shooting 50.4% from the field, with 8.3 threes per game. Morez Johnson Jr. is second on the team with 13.3 points a game and his 62.9% shooting percentage fourth among Big Ten players.
On defense, Michigan is giving up 71.5 points per game, 14th among Big Ten teams. Opponents are shooting just 35.8% from the field against them and hitting 9.5 threes a night. The Wolverines have managed to force 12.5 turnovers from foes each game and the defense is averaging 5.5 steals and 6.3 blocks per game. Auburn quick to regroup
The Tigers had a date with Oregon as part of Monday’s slate in the Players Era Festival. They are a field goal shy of coming into this showcase undefeated and they rebounded nicely from their one-point loss to No. 1 Houston by decimating Jacksonville State. Keyshawn Murphy went for a season-high 19 points while grabbing 7 rebounds in the latest win. The senior forward has averaged 14.3 points in his three games. Keyshawn Hall, who is leading the team with 23.3 points and 11 rebounds per game, suffered a foot sprain versus Houston, missed the Jackson State game and will not play in the Players Era Festival. The team is putting up 93.4 points per game on 50.2% shooting with 8.2 threes a night.
The Tigers’ scoring defense is averaging 69.6 points per game, seventh among SEC defenses. Teams have shot 40.8% and hit 7.8 threes per game versus Auburn this season. They are averaging 9.8 steals and 4.8 assists per game, which has afforded them 13.8 turnovers from their opponents each night. In the rebounding department, the Tigers are grabbing 42.6 per game. With Hall out, Murphy is the top rebounded with 6.7 per game. Kyle Overton is averaging 2 steals per game, seventh in the SEC.

Michigan vs. Auburn Picks
Spread Pick for Michigan vs. Auburn
- Auburn +3.5 (5 units)
These teams last met just eight months ago in a game that carried much larger stakes than this one. The Tigers won by 13 points as -9 favorites in the Sweet 16 battle, before falling to Houston. While Auburn has aced four easy exams, they failed their first big test versus the top team in the country. However, they nearly pulled it off, they just fell flat on the offensive end. Yet, they still scored 72 points against one of the top defenses in the country. Michigan is far from that and while they’ve passed all of their exams and tests so far, their efforts versus lesser power conference clubs leave a lot to be desired. They needed overtime to beat Wake and scored just 67 points against TCU. Hall being out for Auburn is a bit of an issue, but they have plenty of bodies to pick up the scoring slack.
Take the Tigers getting the points.
Over/Under Pick for Michigan vs. Auburn
- Over 159.5 (5 units)
This matchup features two Top 50 scoring offenses, both averaging over 89 points per game and both shooting over 50% from the field. The Wolverines’ offense had one down game, versus TCU, but have otherwise scored at least 85 points in all of their other efforts. Auburn’s worst offensive effort was for 72 points against one of the nation’s best defenses. They’ve scored 93 points or more in their four other games. In terms of tempo, KenPom has the Tigers ranked 140th overall and the Wolverines rank 52nd, so tempo should be more on the upside.
Take the over.
