The No. 23 Bulldogs (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) also won big on Monday, taking out Texas Southern, 98-43, as -29.5 favorites at home. Oklahoma has blocks in place

The Sooners are looking to build off of their first trip to the NCAA Tournament under head coach Porter Moser, now in his fifth season at the helm. They were actually trailing by four points in the second half of their opener versus Saint Francis before a 32-3 run put things in order.

Four starters scored at least 14 points in Monday’s win and Koul Atak came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points in 20 minutes. The freshman forward knocked down four threes in his collegiate debut. Returning forward Mohamed Wague, who averaged 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds off the bench last season, added a double-double to the mix with 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Oklahoma had a decent offense a year ago, averaging 78.3 points per game, but in the hotly contested SEC, that put them ninth overall. Wague is one of only two players who played at least six games for the Sooners last season, though a trio of redshirts, including Atak, should bring the team together sooner than most.

A key transfer for the Sooners is former St. Joseph’s guard Xzayvier Brown, who will take over at the point. Last season, he led the Hawks in steals (62) and was third on the team in assists (117). He also averaged 17.6 points per game, fourth best in the Atlantic-10 last season. Brown came out gunning in his debut with Oklahoma, scoring 16 points on 5-10 shooting while dishing out a team-high 6 assists. He also had a team-high 3 steals in the win.

Team notes

  • Monday was the third time since the 96-97 season that four players scored 14 points or more in a game.
  • The team’s 10 blocked shots in the season opener were their most in a game since 2020.
  • The Sooners have won 16 straight non-conference games.

Hope always high for Gonzaga

The 21st-ranked Bulldogs returned only 36% of their scoring from last season, but they gladly grabbed scoring from other places to fill up the gaps quite nicely. That was all on full display in their opener as they pulled away from Texas Southern by outscoring them, 52-16, in the second half.

In terms of returning offense, Graham Ike, who is on the Naismith Trophy Watch List, led the Zags with 17.3 points per game last season. Named a Preseason All-American by CBS Sports, the senior forward shot 59.8% from the field last season. He wasted no time in warming up to the new season, dropping a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in only 23 minutes of play. Tyon Grant-Foster, a transfer from Gulf Coast, led the Dogs in scoring with 14 points on Monday. A 50.1% shooting team last season, Gonzaga’s shooters were ready to roll in game one, shooting 53.6% overall and 31.8% from three-point range.

The Zags may have the strongest group of small forwards in the land, each checking in at 6-foot-7. Grant-Foster, Steele Venters and Jalen Warley came into the season with a combined 266 career games and 2,856 career points. Warley was a menace off the bench on Monday, scoring 8 points, with 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a team-best 4 steals. Venters added 6 points, a rebound, and an assist in 15 minutes off the bench.

Team notes

  • Ike is 28 points from 2,000 for his career.
  • The roster features four players with at least 1,000 career points.
  • Gonzaga is 16-6 all-time at the Spokane Arena.

Oklahoma vs. Gonzaga Picks

Spread Pick for Oklahoma vs. Gonzaga Picks

  • Gonzaga -10.5 (5 units)

These two teams last met in 2021, an NCAA Tournament game Gonzaga won by 10 points. Both teams looked really strong in their openers, though both were against cupcake opponents. The Sooners look to have built a very strong roster that won’t back down in the ultra-competitive SEC. While they did get a very big contribution from Atak off of their bench, Oklahoma doesn’t have a ton of depth that contributes after him. The same cannot be said for the Bulldogs, who are one of the deepest teams in the country. No one knows how to handle a talented roster like Gonzaga’s like Mark Few does, and he seems to already have his boys in motion. Ike will take the reins and shouldn’t feel too much pressure doing so, given all of the relief options around him. Gonzaga is 3-0 SU and ATS in their last three games against the Sooners.

Take the Bulldogs giving the points.

Over/Under Pick for Oklahoma vs. Gonzaga Picks

  • Over 162.5 (5 units)

These two teams were both quick to get the scoreboards lit up, with both scoring at least 45 points in each half. Oklahoma was able to eclipse 100 points and shot the ball exceptionally well on Monday, same for the Bulldogs. Both teams also had five double-digit scorers in their season openers, so there are tons of scoring options available on both sides. On top of that, each had a few veteran leaders making sure that the new faces were up to speed quickly. Last season, between the two teams, the over was 41-27-1.

Take the over.
