Key Matchups for Pittsburgh vs. West Virginia
Pitt looking for a stronger season in the ACC
Pitt, under Jeff Capel (114-107), has been pretty ordinary. Last season, they went 17-5 overall and 8-12 in the ACC. They are off to a strong start this season, having won three straight at home against mid-majors. Their last win took place on Monday as they beat Eastern Michigan 78-66. Senior center Cameron Corhen (6-10, 235) led the way with 16 points in 36 minutes before fouling out. Freshman Omari Witherspoon added 15 points, but struggled at the line (1-for-3).
In their last game, the Panthers were missing guard Brandin Cummings, who has averaged 18.5 points per game and is shooting 50% from the field in two games. The sophomore is listed as questionable with an ankle injury after missing the Eastern Michigan game. Corhen is the second leading scorer at 15ppg and the leading rebounder at 10.7 per game.
Mountaineers make another coaching change
West Virginia went 19-13 last season and 10-10 in the Big 12. Ross Hodge takes over as their fourth new WVU coach in four years. His squad has looked pretty good thus far, but like Pitt, they've faxed three mid-major teams at home. In their last game, they beat Lehigh 69-47 on Sunday. Brennen Lorient led the way with 26 points and seven rebounds. He went 11 for 15 from the field and shot 3 of 4 from long range.
Lorient is a transfer from North Texas and started his career at FAU. He's averaging 16.3 points and shoots 56.3% from the field. Guard Honor Huff averages 15.7 points and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 31.3% from the field. Huff is a 5-10 transfer from Chattanooga and VMI.

This is a revenge game for the Mountaineers and Morgantown is a tough place to play in basketball and football. Even with a new coach and mostly new players, they are a better team than Pitt, especially if Cummings doesn't play. As for the total, Pitt loves to play methodically, as they are 313th in Adjusted Tempo according to KenPom, while West Virginia is at 362.
