Key Matchups for Purdue vs. Alabama

Final Four or Bust?

Purdue went 24-12 last season and 13-7 in the Big 10 without the great Zach Edey. But expectations are high this season with four starters returning. Last season, they fell to Houston in the Sweet 16, 62-60. In that game, star point guard Braden Smith was held to seven points, but dished out 15 assists. Houston also leapfrogged Purdue in the AP Poll to rank first. That really doesn't matter this early in the season. What matters is that the Boilermakers beat Evansville 82-51 last Tuesday to open the season and defeated Oakland 87-77 last Friday as a 31-point favorite. In that game, Smith scored 20 points, dished out nine dimes and grabbed seven boards. Fletcher Loyer added 15 points on 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Purdue's defense wasn't great against Oakland, as they allowed them to shoot 44% from the field. Last season, the Boilermakers averaged 77.3 points per game, 31.7 in the paint, 14.6 off of turnovers and 7.8 on fast breaks. Loyer leads Purdue with 22.5 points per game and is shooting 58.8% from the field. Smith leads the team with 10.0 assists per game and is averaging 13 points per game. The Boilermakers are missing Trey Kaufmann-Renn, a 6-9 power forward who had played in 110 straight games in previous seasons due to hip and back soreness. He averaged 20.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game last season.

'Bama out for revenge

Alabama beat North Dakota 91-62 to open their season on Nov 3. But on Saturday, they were tested by then-No. 5 St. John's from Madison Square Garden. The Crimson Tide wound up with the impressive road win 103-96 (as a 4-point dog) thanks to a career-high 25 points from Labaron Philon Jr. Aden Holloway added 21 points and four assists, while shooting 9-of-18 from the field. Latrell Wrightsell contributed 17 points and four steals off the bench.

Nate Oats' team went 28-9 last season and they have just one starter back in Philon Jr. However, Wrightsell Jr averaged 11.5 points per game last season before suffering a season-ending injury. They also brought in several transfers, including Taylor Bol Bowen (6-10, 202) from Florida State, who had 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks against St. John's. He averaged 8 points and 5.2 rebounds for the Seminoles last season.

Key Injuries and Analysis for Purdue vs. Alabama

Purdue:

  • F Trey Kaufman-Renn (undisclosed) is questionable. He averaged 20.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game last season.

Alabama:

  • F Keitenn Bristow (ankle) is questionable. The Tennessee State transfer averaged 11.3 points and 4.3 rebounds last season. Hasn't played this season.
  • G Jalil Bethera (foot) is out. Averaged 7.1 points for Miami-Fl. last season.

Purdue vs. Alabama ATS and Over/Under Betting Picks

These are two outstanding teams and programs. But in this early-season top-10 battle from Tuscaloosa, there is just one side to pick and a pretty easy total. Check them along with the analysis below.

Purdue vs. Alabama Spread

  • Alabama -2 (5 units)

Total for Purdue vs. Alabama

  • Over 173.5 (4 units)

Purdue vs. Alabama Final Score Prediction

  • Alabama 92-Purdue 84

Purdue is going to attempt to slow it down against a team that is usually in the top five in pace (they are 2nd according to KenPom). The problem for Purdue is that they probably won't have Kaufman-Renn for this matchup, and he's too important to risk playing him this early in the season for Matt Painter. The Boilermakers also didn't play that well in their last game against Eastern Michigan, while the Tide had a very impressive win over St. John's. Normally, I'd look at a potential letdown, but not with the key injury to Purdue and the fact that the Boilermakers are the second-ranked team in the nation.
