Last season, they fell to Houston in the Sweet 16, 62-60. In that game, star point guard Braden Smith was held to seven points, but dished out 15 assists. Houston also leapfrogged Purdue in the AP Poll to rank first. That really doesn't matter this early in the season. What matters is that the Boilermakers beat Evansville 82-51 last Tuesday to open the season and defeated Oakland 87-77 last Friday as a 31-point favorite. In that game, Smith scored 20 points, dished out nine dimes and grabbed seven boards. Fletcher Loyer added 15 points on 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Purdue's defense wasn't great against Oakland, as they allowed them to shoot 44% from the field. Last season, the Boilermakers averaged 77.3 points per game, 31.7 in the paint, 14.6 off of turnovers and 7.8 on fast breaks. Normally, I'd look at a potential letdown, but not with the key injury to Purdue and the fact that the Boilermakers are the second-ranked team in the nation.
