Hawks fly over Dragons
Saint Joe's is coming off a 22-13 season with two returning starters from an 11-7 squad in the A-10. They lost three outstanding players, led by Rasheer Fleming, who moved on to the NBA after being drafted in the second round by Phoenix. The Hawks went to the portal to take sophomore guard Deuce Jones II from local rival La Salle. Jones leads the team in the early going with 15.5 points per game on 50% shooting from long range. Dasear Haskins (6-8, 200) is another talented sophomore, who averages 14.5 points after recording 5.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game last season.
In the win over Drexel, guard Jaiden Glover-Toscano, who scored 23 points against Lafayette in the opener, was held scoreless on 0-8 shooting from the field and 0-for-6 from beyond the arc. But Jones took over with 29 points on 12-of-13 from the line. Saint Joe's shot just 38% from the field, but made up for that by going 26-of-30 from the line.
Last year, the Hawks ranked 120th in rebounding margin (+2.4) and 226th in shooting percentage (43.8%).

Hokies looking to bounce back from a rough season
Virginia Tech basketball and football have had their struggles lately. They are more worried about football than basketball, but Mike Young will need to bounce back in his sixth season after winning 13 games last season. The good news is that they brought back nearly 50% of last season's scoring, led by forward Tobi Lawal (6-8, 215), who averaged 12.4 points and 7.0 rebounds last season.
In their overtime win over Providence on Saturday, Lawal contributed 13 rebounds, but it was Neoklis Avdalas (6-8, 215) who stunned the Friars with 33 points, six assists and five rebounds. The 6-8 freshman from Greece made 13 of 23 shots and 5-of-8 from long range. It's early, but Adalas is already getting comparisons to Lakers' star Luka Doncic as a "lefty Luka". He's averaging 20.5 points, but more impressively, 7.5 assists thus far. Amani Hansberry (6-8, 240), a rugged West Virginia transfer, adds 18 points per game and 12 rebounds but has eight turnovers in two games.
Young had to harp on turnovers, as last season, his team finished 329th with a -2.6 turnover margin. This year, they rank 20th in turnovers per possession and 35th in turnovers per game at 9.0.
Saint Joseph's vs. Virginia Tech Spread Pick
Prediction and Pick for Saint Joe's vs. Virginia Tech
- Saint Joe's +11.5 (4 units)
Virginia Tech is coming off a nice win over Providence. But they were great defensively, allowing the Friars to shoot 45% from the field and they went to the line 25 times. The Hokies shot the ball well, but it's tough to repeat it twice and Avdalas will be on everyone's radar. The Hawks have two long wings in Glover-Toscano (6-6, 205), a St. John's transfer, and Haskins (6-8, 200), who can make things more difficult for Avdalas. The Hawks are 104th in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency according to KenPom, and last year, they were 66th, so Billy Lange's teams normally play hard-nosed, tough defense.
Over/Under Pick for Saint Joe's vs. Virginia Tech
