Alabama keeps rising

A season-opening loss against Florida State had the folks in Tuscaloosa gripping their pearls, but since then, the Crimson Tide are flying high, winning six straight games, including four in a row against ranked conference opponents. Versus No. 11 Tennessee, the team scored in all four quarters, and the offense went for 373 yards while the defense held on despite giving up 410 yards on the day.

Alabama ranks seventh in the SEC in scoring offense, averaging 35.1 points per game this season. Total yards are coming at a clip of 422.7 yards per game with a lean on the passing game, which is providing 297.1 yards per game, third in the SEC. Ty Simpson has thrown for 1,931 yards, 18 touchdowns and only one interception. He eluded a sack last weekend and has been sacked just 12 times this year. Germie Bernard has 33 catches for 472 yards and 5 TDs. They’ve handed the ball off just 239 times, the third fewest in the SEC, for a 125.6 yards per game average. Jam Miller has taken 70 of those carries for 282 yards and two touchdowns.

Bama’s defense ranks fifth in the SEC in scoring, allowing 17.7 points per game, and fourth with 309.1 total yards against. They’ve struggled versus the run, giving up 154.6 yards per game, fourth most in the SEC. Against the pass, they are allowing 154.6 yards per game, second best in the SEC, and they’ve recorded 13 sacks and seven interceptions. Justin Jefferson leads the team with 40 tackles to go with a sack and an interception. Bray Hubbard leads the team with three picks and Yhonzae Pierre has a team-high four sacks, three of them coming last weekend.

South Carolina suffers in SEC

Since a 2-0 SU start to their season, the Gamecocks have gone 1-4 SU, losing their last two games against ranked SEC sides. They've been outscored by 62 points in their four SEC losses. While their defense hasn’t been getting rolled over, their offense hasn’t done nearly enough to get them into a position to strike it big. Last weekend, versus No. 14 Oklahoma, they scored seven points for the second time this season. The offense just had 224 yards in the loss, while the defense held their opponent to 319 yards.

South Carolina ranks dead last in the SEC in offensive scoring, averaging 20.1 points per game. They’ve gained 297.7 total yards each week, also last in the conference, with just 106.6 yards coming via their rushing game. Four players have over 100 yards rushing for the team, and Rahsul Faison leads the way with 281 yards and three touchdowns. The passing game is averaging 191.1 yards per game. LaNorris Sellers threw for exactly 124 yards in each of his last two games. On the season, he has 1,134 passing yards, 5 TDs, 2 INTs, and has been sacked 25 times, second most in the SEC. His top target has been Vandrevius Jacobs with 21 catches, 343 yards, and 3 TDs.

On defense, they are allowing 20 points per game, 10th in the SEC. They are also 10th in the conference in yardage, giving up 336.6 total yards each week. Against the run, they’ve allowed 150.4 yards per game, and against the pass, 186.1 yards per game. The Gamecocks have also recorded 15 sacks and eight interceptions. Four players have over 30 tackles and DQ Smith leads the pack with 38. Bryan Thomas Jr. has a team-high four sacks.

Team notes

  • Tied for fourth in the country with three defensive touchdowns.
  • Their 18.12-yard average on punt returns is 12th 12th-best in the nation.
  • William Joyce is 18-18 on PATs and 5-7 on FGs.

Alabama vs. South Carolina Picks

Spread Pick for Alabama vs. South Carolina

  • South Carolina +12.5 (4 units)

The Crimson Tide own a 12-4 SU advantage against the Gamecocks, winning their most recent meeting, last season, 27-25. Bama looked scary good against Tennessee last weekend, but that was on their home turf in front of a very favorable crowd. Things are going to be a bit different in Columbia. Alabama is 2-1 SU on the road this season with its two wins coming by an average of three points per game. The Tide offense is heavy on the pass, but South Carolina has one of the best pass defenses in the country. The biggest issue for the Gamecocks is their lack of scoring. Against ranked SEC teams, they’ve averaged 12.3 points per game. That will be enough to keep them close. Alabama is 3-1 in the last four games between the teams, but South Carolina has found a way to stay close enough, going 4-0 ATS in those games.

Take the Gamecocks getting the points at home.

Over/Under Pick for Alabama vs. South Carolina

  • Under 47.5 (4 units)

These two combined for 52 points when they met last season, hitting over against a 50-point total. This matchup features an Alabama offense that is middle of the SEC pack and a South Carolina offense that is dead last in the conference in scoring. The Gamecocks have twice scored just seven points in a game against SEC opponents this season and in their last two games, they scored a combined 17 points. Alabama’s offense had a big week last weekend, but that was at home. On the road this season, the Tide average just 22.7 points per game. Both teams have seen the under hit in their last two games.

Take the under.
