App State Defense Holds Back Oregon State

The Mountaineers are coming off a win last week against Oregon State with a final score of 27-23. This would be the second win at home this season as the Mountaineers remain undefeated in front of their fans. However, App State has lost its last two games on the road and will be looking to break the potential losing streak away from home.

App State has thrived on defense this season, more specifically against the run game. The Mountaineers rank 15th in the country in rushing yards allowed and are 16th in rushing yards allowed per carry at 2.8. While their rush defense sits at one of the top in the country, their pass defense has struggled. App State is 108th overall in passing yards allowed and 94th in passing yards allowed per reception at 7.5. This lack of reliability in their pass defense has led to the Mountaineers ranking 79th in points allowed.

While the defense has struggled in defending the pass game, the offense has done well in its pass game to counter their poor pass defense. App State ranks 44th in passing yards this season and is 23rd in pass attempts. The offense for App State seems to rely heavily on their pass game, which has generated consistent yards but not so many points as they sit 103rd in points this season. Leading this offense has been Junior quarterback AJ Swann, who has averaged 7.4 yards per pass and is averaging 235.8 yards per game. Unfortunately, they have just as many touchdowns as they do interceptions at six.

Georgia State Unable To Find Success

Georgia State picked up another loss last week against James Madison with a final score of 14-7. This is the third loss of the season for Georgia State as they have yet to find a win against a non-FBS opponent. The Panthers aim to break their losing streak with a win at home.

The Panthers' largest weakness this season has been their defense, which ranks 132nd in the country in points allowed, allowing 206 points across their five games played. Georgia State has been unable to stop the run game, ranking 127th in rushing yards and 130th in rushing yards per carry at 5.4. The Panthers have also been unable to stop the pass game, ranking 122nd in passing yards per reception at 8.2.

The offense for Georgia State has not been much better as they sit 124th in points generated so far this season. While the pass game has not been terrible, sitting 74th in total passing yards, the Panthers have been unable to grab enough first downs, sitting 130th overall. Senior quarterback TJ Finley has been attempting to drive the offense, averaging 181.3 passing yards per game, but his touchdown per game average has not been enough.

Appalachian State vs. Georgia State Picks and Predictions

Money Line Pick for Appalachian State vs. Georgia State

  • App State Money Line (-146) (5 units)Β

Appalachian State is 10-0 in their last 10 games versus Georgia State. Georgia State has a record of 1-4-0 last season as a home underdog. While neither team has a dominant offense, the Mountaineers have been able to stop many offenses thanks to their run defense. App State is facing off against a team that already has problems running the ball and now will be unable to run, going up against the Mountaineers’ defense.

Over/Under Pick for Appalachian State versus Georgia State

  • Under 55.5 (-110) ( 4 units)Β

Appalachian State had an over/under record last season of 0-6 when they were a road favorite. The Mountaineers also had an over/under record last season of 4-14-1 against conference opponents. Neither team has thrived on offense and App State has focused more on its defense to grab its wins. Even with Georgia State struggling on defense, the Mountaineers alone will be unable to carry us over this total.
