Appalachian State couldn't have asked for a better beginning, outgaining Maine 647-250 while producing 348 passing yards and 299 rushing yards. The Mountaineers finished with 34 first downs and possessed the football for more than 33 minutes.

Malachi Singleton threw for 291 yards, while App State had four different players rush for at least 44 yards. Jaquari Lewis led the way with 69 rushing yards. The balance is particularly encouraging because the Mountaineers are working with a roster featuring more than 70 newcomers.

App State now faces a significant increase in competition, but the Mountaineers have enough offensive balance to challenge an East Carolina team coming off a difficult opener.

East Carolina Looks to Rebound at Home

East Carolina's opening assignment was considerably more difficult, with the Pirates losing 48-10 at Alabama. ECU was held to only 162 total yards, including just two rushing yards, while Alabama accumulated 487 yards.

Those numbers are concerning, but Alabama represents a completely different level of competition than App State. Returning home should give East Carolina a much better opportunity to establish its running game and sustain possessions.

The Pirates can't afford another one-dimensional performance, however. App State showed enough offensive firepower against Maine that East Carolina could find itself in trouble if the Mountaineers are consistently given favorable field position.

East Carolina faced the much stronger Week 1 opponent, but App State +8.5 is attractive after the Mountaineers produced 647 yards with excellent offensive balance. ECU's inability to run against Alabama shouldn't be projected directly into this matchup, but asking the Pirates to win by more than a touchdown against an App State team coming off a 52-point victory is difficult. Take App State +8.5 if that number remains available.

The Over 55.5 is the preferred total. App State demonstrated considerable offensive potential with 55 points and 647 yards, while East Carolina should produce substantially more offense against the Mountaineers than it did at Alabama.
