Arkansas State Produced the Response It Needed
Arkansas State's season began with a difficult 42-24 loss at Memphis, but the Red Wolves looked like a completely different team in their home opener. They defeated West Georgia 52-7, scoring 31 unanswered points during the second half and completely eliminating any possibility of an upset.
The most encouraging development was Arkansas State's ability to create offense without relying exclusively on the passing game. The Red Wolves rushed for 256 yards and received production from several different options. Their defense was even more disruptive, forcing four turnovers and returning two of them for touchdowns. That combination allowed Arkansas State to turn a competitive first half into a blowout.
The problem is that TCU represents a substantial increase in competition. Arkansas State already struggled against Memphis in its first FBS road game and now enters another difficult environment against a Big 12 opponent. The Red Wolves need to protect the football, avoid allowing TCU to create explosive plays and find enough rushing success to keep the Horned Frogs' offense off the field.
TCU's Offense Exploded in Its Home Opener
TCU needed a convincing performance after dropping its opener, and the Horned Frogs delivered one against Grambling State. TCU won 63-7 and generated 613 total yards, including 444 through the air. The Horned Frogs scored touchdowns on their first four possessions and essentially ended the competitive portion of the game before halftime.
The offensive efficiency was particularly impressive. TCU averaged more than eight yards per play and repeatedly generated explosive gains against Grambling. The Horned Frogs also limited the Tigers to 232 total yards, giving them the kind of complete performance they needed before returning to FBS competition.
Arkansas State is considerably more dangerous than Grambling, particularly after scoring 52 points itself last weekend. Still, TCU owns the advantages in overall roster depth and gets another game at Amon G. Carter Stadium. If the Horned Frogs maintain the offensive rhythm they established Saturday, Arkansas State will have difficulty keeping this within striking distance for four quarters.
Arkansas State vs TCU Picks and Prediction
Pick: TCU -17.5 or Better
Take TCU if the spread is -17.5 or better. Arkansas State deserves respect after its 52-7 victory, but the Red Wolves lost by 18 when they stepped up against Memphis. TCU just generated 613 yards and 63 points and now remains home against another opponent it should be able to overwhelm offensively. I'll lay anything below three touchdowns with the Horned Frogs.
Pick: Over 58.5
Take the Over if the total is set at 58.5 or lower. These teams combined to score 115 points last weekend, and Arkansas State has enough offensive ability to contribute even if TCU controls the matchup. The Horned Frogs could reach the 40s themselves after scoring 63 against Grambling. A projected TCU 42, Arkansas State 21 produces the favorite cover while taking the game Over.
Final Picks: TCU -17.5 or Better and Over 58.5
