The Arkansas Razorbacks travel to Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, to face the No. 21 Utah Utes on Saturday, September 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:15 PM ET on ESPN. Both teams enter at 1-0, with Arkansas coming off a 31-14 victory over North Alabama and Utah opening with a dominant 66-14 victory over Idaho. The current betting market has Utah favored by approximately 10.5 points, with the total in the mid-50s. Arkansas Defense Leads the Way in Opener
Arkansas opened the Ryan Silverfield era with a 31-14 victory over North Alabama in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks weren't overwhelmingly dominant from beginning to end, but their defense consistently prevented North Alabama from turning possessions into points.
That defensive performance becomes especially important entering Salt Lake City. Arkansas now faces an enormous increase in competition against a Utah offense that just produced more than 600 yards and 66 points.
The Razorbacks must also handle one of the more difficult road environments in college football. Playing at Rice-Eccles Stadium means Arkansas can't afford turnovers, penalties or repeated three-and-outs that allow Utah to establish momentum.
Arkansas has SEC-level talent and enough physicality to prevent this from becoming another Utah rout. The question is whether the Razorbacks can generate enough offense to keep pace if the Utes again create explosive plays.
Utah Offense Explodes for 633 Yards
Utah couldn't have looked much better in its 66-14 destruction of Idaho. The Utes accumulated 633 total yards, including an enormous 364 rushing yards, and averaged 8.4 yards per offensive play.
Devon Dampier threw for 176 yards while helping Utah establish control early. LaMarcus Bell led the rushing attack with 87 yards, and the Utes received offensive contributions from throughout the depth chart.
Utah finished with 33 first downs compared with Idaho's 13 and scored touchdowns through both the passing and running games. The Utes threw five touchdown passes and rushed for four more.
The defense was equally effective, holding Idaho to 225 total yards and forcing two turnovers. Utah committed only one penalty for 10 yards, an impressive level of discipline for a season opener.
Arkansas represents a major upgrade in competition, but Utah's combination of rushing depth, quarterback play and home-field advantage makes the Utes deserved favorites.
Arkansas vs Utah Picks and Prediction
Pick: Utah -10.5
Utah -10.5 is my preferred side. Arkansas should provide substantially more resistance than Idaho, but Utah's ability to run the football is the key matchup advantage. The Utes just produced 364 rushing yards and 633 total yards while showing remarkable offensive balance. Rice-Eccles Stadium also creates a difficult environment for an Arkansas team making its first road appearance under a new coaching staff. I want to stay around 10 rather than chase Utah beyond two touchdowns, but at -10.5 the Utes are the side. Take Utah -10.5.
Pick: Over 56.5
The Over 56.5 is my preferred total. Utah demonstrated enough explosiveness to reach the 30s against substantially better competition than Idaho, while Arkansas has the talent to contribute much more offensively than the Vandals did. The Razorbacks don't need to win for this Over to cash; something around 38-24 or 35-24 gets us there. Utah's offensive depth and Arkansas' ability to contribute make the Over 56.5 attractive.
Final Picks: Utah -10.5 and Over 56.5
