Army Unable To Complete Comeback

Army is coming off a close loss last week against North Texas with a final score of 45-38. This is the second loss of the season for Army as they have yet to find a win at home. Army will be looking for their first conference win of the season on the road against ECU on Thursday.

The Black Knights had a rough start to their week four matchup against North Texas, which saw the Black Knights allow 21 points in the first quarter. While Army did battle back and managed to tie the game and force overtime, it was unfortunately not enough to grab the win as the Black Knights would fall short in grabbing the touchdown needed to secure a win over North Texas.

Senior Dewayne Coleman will be continuing his 2025 season as the starting quarterback for Army.

Dewayne Coleman:

  • has a passer rating of 151.8 with 230 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in 2 games this season.
  • had a passer rating of 152.9 with 121 yards and 1 touchdown in 8 games in 2024.
  • has 217 scrimmage yards this season in his two games played, averaging 4.6 yards per carry with two rushing touchdowns.
  • QB Cale Hellums has played in all three games and has amassed 184 rushing yards and three TDs.

ECU Defense Falls Apart

ECU picked up a loss last week against BYU with a final score of 34-13. This is the second loss of the season for ECU as they look to generate more wins facing off against conference opponents. The Pirates have yet to play against a conference opponent this season.

ECU struggled in its game last week against BYU as the Pirates were unable to stop half of BYU’s drives from scoring. A large issue was their back-to-back loss of possession due to interceptions. The Pirates would drive 79 yards down the field before throwing their first interception and on their following drive would throw an immediate interception which resulted in a touchdown for BYU. Another issue for ECU has been their penalties in which they rank 131st in the country in penalties this season and 126th in penalty yards. ECU will need to clean up its offense if it hopes to find success in their conference.

Senior Katin Houser will be hoping to improve from last week’s loss as the starting quarterback for ECU. Brock Spalding (19 catches for 285 yards) and Anthony Smith (25 for 265 yds) lead the way at wide receiver for the Pirates.

Katin Houser:

  • has a passer rating of 141.9 with 1,258 yards, 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 4 games this season.
  • had a passer rating of 144.9 with 2,006 yards, 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 9 games in 2024.
  • has a passer rating of 146.3 with 282 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception in 1 game versus Army in his career.

Army vs. East Carolina (ECU) Prediction and Picks

Spread Pick for Army vs. East Carolina (ECU)

  • East Carolina -5.5 (-105 )

ECU had a record against the spread last season of 4-1-0 as a home favorite. ECU is also 3-1-1 against the spread following a loss last season. Dating back to 1999, Army has only covered this spread once against ECU in the seven games played. Army relies heavily on its run game, and ECU is one of the better teams in the country at defending against the run, ranking 29th this season in rushing yards allowed and 21st in rushing yards allowed per carry, allowing only 2.8 yards per carry. The Pirates will be looking for a bounce-back game after their loss to BYU last week and I have to look toward them to grab a win in their first conference game.

Over/Under Pick for Army vs. East Carolina (ECU)

  • Under 52.5 (-110 )

Army since 2023 has an over/under record of 3-6-0 in games that follow a loss. Last season, ECU had an over/under record of 2-4-0 when playing at home. Army’s offense is going to be shut down by the Pirates thanks to ECU’s stalwart run defense this season. ECU, however themselves has not been too impressive so far this season on offense and they alone will not be able to reach an over in this game.
