Army Wants to Control the Clock

Army has played only twice through the first three weeks and enters Philadelphia at 1-1. The Black Knights remain a difficult preparation because their offensive approach places tremendous importance on assignment discipline, tackling and possession count. That becomes especially significant in a short-week Friday game against a conference opponent.

Army’s early offensive production has again been built around its ground game. The Black Knights have already shown that they can create explosive rushing plays while using the passing game selectively. That style is designed to shorten games, limit opposing possessions and force defenses to remain disciplined for four quarters.

The matchup history also favors Army. The Black Knights have defeated Temple in four consecutive meetings, although last year’s 14-13 result illustrates how tight this series can become. Army should not expect to simply overpower an improving Temple team, but its ability to dictate pace gives the Black Knights an important strategic advantage.

Temple Has Been More Competitive

Temple enters at 1-2, but the record does not tell the entire story. The Owls have been much more competitive than the program was during some recent seasons and have shown an increased willingness to establish the running game and rely on their defense. They now return to Lincoln Financial Field for an important conference matchup.

One of the more interesting early indicators has been Temple’s performance against the spread, with the Owls covering each of their first three games. That does not automatically make Temple the side here, but it demonstrates that the market has had difficulty properly pricing the program’s improvement. Temple has been capable of staying competitive even when the outright results have not followed.

The biggest challenge is handling Army’s offensive structure without sacrificing explosive plays. Temple needs to win early downs and create obvious passing situations. If Army consistently reaches third-and-short, the Black Knights can dominate possession and prevent Temple from establishing offensive rhythm. That tactical battle could determine the entire game.

Army vs Temple Picks and Prediction

Pick: Army Moneyline

Temple’s improvement makes laying a large hypothetical number unattractive, but Army still gets the outright edge. The Black Knights have won four consecutive meetings with Temple and possess the offensive style capable of controlling possession and reducing variance. Temple should make this competitive, but Army’s rushing identity and recent success in the series are enough to back the visitors straight up.

Pick: Under 51.5 or Higher

Army’s preferred game script naturally points toward fewer possessions, and last year’s meeting finished 14-13. Temple has also shown enough defensive improvement to make a shootout less appealing as the baseline expectation. At 51.5 or better, the under would provide room for something in the neighborhood of a 27-20 result while still cashing. A total below the upper 40s would significantly reduce the value.

Final Picks: Army Moneyline and Under 51.5 or Higher
