Ball State vs Kent State Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 26 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 09/20/2026, 04:00 PM ET

The Ball State Cardinals visit the Kent State Golden Flashes at Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio, on Saturday, September 26, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET with coverage on ESPN+. This is the MAC opener for both programs. Ball State enters at 1-2, while Kent State is also 1-2 after a 59-3 road loss to No. 6 Ohio State. This will be the 34th all-time meeting between the programs. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Ball State Steps Down in Competition

Ball State’s 1-2 start requires context. The Cardinals opened the season at Ohio State and lost 56-3 before responding with a 41-17 victory over Stony Brook. Their nonconference schedule provided both a severe test and a confidence-building opportunity before conference play.

The Cardinals have shown a substantial difference in offensive production depending on opponent quality. Scoring three against Ohio State and 41 against Stony Brook demonstrates the range. Kent State represents something closer to the level of competition Ball State will see regularly during MAC play.

The biggest opportunity is simply offensive consistency. Ball State does not need to produce 40 points to win this game, but it cannot afford the negative possessions that occur against stronger opponents. Sustained drives and field position could be especially valuable against a Kent State team coming off a physically demanding trip to Columbus.

Kent State Returns Home After Ohio State

Kent State is also 1-2. The Golden Flashes were overwhelmed 59-3 at Ohio State after entering that matchup at 1-1. They now return home for a much more realistic opportunity to compete as MAC play begins.

Like Ball State, Kent State has already faced elite Power Four opposition. The Golden Flashes opened with a 57-0 loss at South Carolina before rebounding with a victory over Wofford and then running into Ohio State. Their record therefore looks worse when viewed without considering the strength of those two road opponents.

This is consequently a much more useful measuring stick for Kent State. The Golden Flashes are finally playing an opponent from their own conference and competitive tier. Home field provides an advantage, but Kent State must prove it can generate enough offense after scoring just three points in two games against major-conference opponents.

Ball State vs Kent State Picks and Prediction

Pick: Ball State Moneyline

This is close enough that I prefer avoiding an imaginary spread. Ball State has demonstrated a little more offensive upside, and the Cardinals enter a matchup where the opposing defense should look dramatically different from the Ohio State unit they saw in Week 1. Kent State gets home field, but Ball State has the better path to generating enough points to win a tight MAC game.

Pick: Over 47.5 or Lower

This is more of a number-dependent play than a strong blind over. Both teams have been suppressed badly by elite opponents, but those performances can distort their offensive profiles. Against comparable MAC competition, there should be considerably more scoring opportunities. At 47.5 or lower, a game in the neighborhood of 27-24 gets us there. Above 50, I would become much more cautious.

Final Picks: Ball State Moneyline and Over 47.5 or Lower
