Ball State Has a Chance to Make This Competitive

Ball State enters at 1-1 and gets a road matchup against a Liberty team that hasn't looked dominant through its first two games. The Flames lost their opener at James Madison and then needed a late touchdown to survive an FCS opponent at home. That makes this a considerably more approachable road assignment than Liberty's reputation might initially suggest.

The Cardinals' most important objective is avoiding the explosive plays that allowed Liberty to score quickly against Gardner-Webb. The Flames scored on two of their first three offensive plays last Saturday, showing that they can still create sudden offense even when they struggle to consistently sustain drives. Ball State needs to make Liberty earn points through longer possessions rather than surrendering immediate momentum.

Ball State should also have confidence that this can remain competitive late. Liberty has yet to win a game by more than one point, and the Flames haven't shown the consistency necessary to automatically trust them with a large spread. If the Cardinals protect the football and remain patient offensively, they have a realistic opportunity to stay inside the number throughout the fourth quarter.

Liberty Escaped but Still Has Plenty to Fix

Liberty's 24-23 victory over Gardner-Webb was more relief than statement. The Flames scored quickly to establish an early advantage but then allowed Gardner-Webb to score 20 unanswered points. Liberty went scoreless in the third quarter and trailed 23-17 before producing the winning touchdown with 2:34 remaining.

That result followed a 20-13 loss at James Madison, leaving Liberty at 1-1 with only 37 total points scored through two games. The Flames have shown flashes of explosive ability but haven't consistently sustained offensive production. Against Ball State, they need to establish rhythm rather than relying on another late-game rescue.

Home field gives Liberty an advantage, and the Flames should be favored. But the Gardner-Webb performance makes laying a big number difficult. Liberty has to prove it can play a complete four-quarter game before bettors should comfortably trust it to win by multiple touchdowns.

Ball State vs Liberty Picks and Prediction

Pick: Ball State +10.5 or Better

Take Ball State if the Cardinals are getting +10.5 or better. Liberty deserves to be favored at Williams Stadium, but the Flames just needed a touchdown with 2:34 remaining to beat Gardner-Webb 24-23. After also losing 20-13 at James Madison, Liberty hasn't demonstrated enough offensive consistency to justify laying double digits comfortably. Getting more than a touchdown with Ball State is the more attractive position.

Pick: Under 55.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 55.5 or higher. Liberty's first two games have produced combined totals of 33 and 47 points. The Flames have scored only 37 themselves, while Ball State's best chance to remain competitive is preventing the game from accelerating. Something around Liberty 27, Ball State 21 makes the underdog and Under a logical combination.

Final Picks: Ball State +10.5 or Better and Under 55.5
