Baylor falls to TCU after turnover-riddled comeback attempt
The Baylor Bears are 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 conference play heading into Week 9, coming off a 42-36 road loss against TCU. It was a game that easily could've been a win, but Baylor's gross yardage through the air wasn't enough to offset their inefficiency and giveaways.
Senior quarterback Sawyer Robertson completed 25 of 52 passes for 318 yards, completing a dismal 48.1 percent of his passes for only 6.1 yards per attempt. He threw only two touchdowns–a low number, in Baylor terms–while throwing a season-high three interceptions, all in the fourth quarter. The team wasn't overly effective on the ground, either–backs Michael Turner, Caden Knighten, and Bryson Washington all took at least ten carries, but the team averaged only 3.3 yards per attempt en route to 121 yards. By comparison, TCU lead back Kevorian Barnes, who racked up 106 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries by himself.

Baylor remains the top passing offense in the FBS by volume, averaging 344.3 yards per game. They're tied for 25th with 36.3 points per game, but rank 118th of 136 FBS teams with 31.4 points allowed. They'll face their most formidable conference opponent yet when they travel to Cincinnati in Week 9.
Cincinnati continues rolling through Big 12
The Cincinnati Bearcats are 6-1 overall and bowl-eligibile, co-lead the Big 12 with a 4-0 conference record, and have quietly climbed to 21st in the AP Top 25 heading into Week 9. Last week's 49-17 win over Oklahoma State was an expected result, but it extended a win streak that's now six games long and includes a win over then-ranked No. 14 Iowa State (38-30).
Junior quarterback Brendan Sorsby had a strong performance against OSU, completing 21 of 30 passes for 284 yards and four touchdowns. He posted a 70.0 completion percentage and 9.5 yards per attempt, only took one sack, and added a touchdown on the ground in the fourth quarter. He's now up to 1,732 yards with a 65.6 completion percentage on the season, 18 passing touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns, and hasn't thrown an interception since the team's season opener against Nebraska.
Cincinnati ranks T-43rd in passing yards (263.0), 44th in rushing yards (183.4), 15th in points (37.9), and 26th in points allowed (18.9) per game among 136 FBS teams. They're a highly effective and balanced offense led by one of the most efficient and productive quarterbacks in the FBS–they'll host BYU in late November, but it's hard to find another loss on their schedule as things stand.
Baylor vs. Cincinnati Pick
Spread Pick for Baylor vs. Cincinnati
- Cincinnati -3.5 (-110) (5 Units)
Baylor enters this game with the highest-volume passing offense in the FBS, but they're far from as polished on that side of the ball as Cincinnati has been. Robertson has attempted 117 more passes than Sorsby but has only completed four more for touchdowns while throwing six more interceptions. The Bears are 1-6 against the spread this season and coming off an ugly game from their passing offense, while the Bearcats are 5-2 ATS after easily clearing as 24-point favorites against Oklahoma State. I'm not thinking twice about whether Cincy will cover here as only 3.5-point favorites.
Over/Under Pick for Baylor vs. Cincinnati
- Under 67.5 (-110) (4 Units)
In a season that's been full of high pregame total lines for Baylor, this is the highest they've seen yet. It's roughly ten points higher than any line the Bearcats have seen, a week after they went over a season-high 58.0 pregame total against Oklahoma State. Baylor lost 27-24 against Arizona State weeks ago–aside from last week's TCU loss, that's the only other game they've played against a team currently ahead of them in the Big 12 standings. Cincinnati has held their last two opponents to 28 total points. I'm not overly inclined to take the over here.
