Baylor vs Auburn Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 5 2026
Baylor and Auburn meet in one of the more intriguing Power Four matchups of the opening weekend when they collide in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET with ABC providing national television coverage. Auburn is currently favored by approximately seven points, while the total is sitting around 59.5. Unlike many of the massive Week 1 mismatches, the question here isn't whether the underdog can survive a blowout. It's whether Auburn is genuinely more than a touchdown better than Baylor at a neutral site. Get into the action with our free college football picks.
This is also a rematch of last season's opener in Waco, where Auburn defeated Baylor 38-24. The circumstances have changed significantly since then. Auburn begins a new era under a different coaching staff, while both programs have undergone meaningful roster changes. That makes simply carrying last year's 14-point Auburn victory forward into this matchup dangerous. The Tigers deserve to be favored, but getting a full touchdown with another Power Four program on a neutral field creates a much more interesting betting decision.
Baylor Has Value Getting a Full Touchdown
Baylor enters the season trying to turn some encouraging underlying performance into more consistent results. The Bears were better than their record suggested in several areas last season, particularly offensively, but turnovers were a major problem. Baylor finished with a minus-13 turnover margin and consistently made life more difficult for itself by giving opponents additional possessions.
There is enough offensive upside for Baylor to make Auburn uncomfortable. The Bears have rebuilt important pieces of the offense and enter the season with the potential to attack an Auburn defense dealing with significant personnel turnover. Baylor doesn't necessarily need to produce 35 points to cover this number. It needs to avoid giveaways, create enough explosive plays to sustain drives and prevent Auburn from controlling field position.
Getting exactly +7 is also important from a betting perspective. Baylor can lose 31-24 and push. It can lose 30-24, 27-21 or 34-28 and cash. That protection becomes even more attractive because this is being played in Atlanta rather than at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn fans should still travel extremely well, but this isn't the same thing as asking Baylor to deal with the full home-field environment in Auburn.
Auburn Begins a New Era in Atlanta
Auburn enters 2026 with plenty of reasons for optimism but also considerable uncertainty. The Tigers begin their first season under a new coaching staff after an offseason focused heavily on rebuilding an offense that needed improvement. The potential for a more explosive, up-tempo attack is one of the primary reasons Auburn is favored by a touchdown.
The biggest concern is how quickly all the new pieces fit together. Auburn is replacing its top five offensive linemen from last season and will rely heavily on transfers to establish continuity up front. That can work, but offensive-line chemistry isn't something that should automatically be assumed in the first game. Baylor's best opportunity to disrupt Auburn is creating pressure before the Tigers' offense settles into a comfortable rhythm.
There is turnover defensively as well. Auburn retained its defensive coordinator after consecutive strong seasons on that side of the ball, but only two of the 10 defenders who played at least 300 snaps last season return. The Tigers have brought in plenty of talent to replace those losses, but Baylor is not the type of opening opponent that allows a completely rebuilt unit several weeks to develop chemistry.
Last Year's Result Doesn't Guarantee Another Auburn Cover
The obvious argument for Auburn is last season's 38-24 victory in Waco. The Tigers went into Baylor's stadium and won by two touchdowns, so laying seven at a neutral site may initially appear reasonable. But college football rosters change rapidly, and both teams look substantially different entering the rematch.
Auburn's preseason expectations are respectable rather than elite. ESPN's SP+ projection has the Tigers around No. 26 nationally with approximately 6.5 projected victories. That suggests Auburn should be competitive in the SEC, but it does not necessarily describe a team that should automatically be laying more than a touchdown against capable Power Four opposition.
This is also Auburn's first opportunity to execute a new offensive system under game conditions. There could be an immediate breakthrough, but there could also be early timing issues, penalties and communication mistakes. Those uncertainties become especially important when laying a full touchdown. Baylor doesn't need to be the better team for our wager to cash. The Bears simply need to remain within one score.
The Total Requires Auburn to Produce Immediately
The 59.5 total is also worth examining because the market is asking these teams to approach 60 combined points in their first game. A 31-28 Auburn victory goes Under. So does 34-24. Even 35-24 lands at exactly 59.
There is certainly a path to the Over. Auburn's new offense is designed to play with tempo and create explosive opportunities, while Baylor should have enough offensive talent to contribute. If both teams quickly establish offensive rhythm, this could become one of the more entertaining games on Saturday's schedule.
The Under becomes more attractive because of the uncertainty surrounding Auburn's offensive line and the natural opening-game adjustment period. If the Tigers experience even a few stalled possessions while implementing the new system, getting to 60 becomes significantly more difficult. Baylor can cover without turning this matchup into a shootout.
Baylor vs Auburn Picks and Prediction
Pick: Baylor +7
I'm taking Baylor +7. The full touchdown is important, particularly because this is a neutral-site game rather than a true Auburn home game at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn deserves to be favored and may ultimately be the better team, but laying seven points with a program beginning a new coaching era and replacing significant personnel on both sides of the football creates unnecessary risk. Baylor has enough offensive upside to remain competitive, and the Bears do not need to repeat last year's result or win outright. They simply need to prevent Auburn from creating more than one score of separation. Something around Auburn 31, Baylor 27 remains my preferred game script, making Baylor +7 the side pick.
Pick: Under 59.5
I'll also take Under 59.5. Auburn's new offensive system brings plenty of upside, but I'm reluctant to assume everything immediately operates at peak efficiency with an overhauled offensive line and a new coaching staff. Baylor should also be more interested in avoiding the turnovers that repeatedly created problems last season than pushing the pace unnecessarily. We can get a competitive, entertaining game without reaching 60 points. Scores such as 31-27, 30-27 or 31-24 all support Baylor +7 while remaining Under the total. Under 59.5 is the preferred total.
Final Picks: Baylor +7 and Under 59.5
