Boston College 1-6, still looking for first FBS win

It's been a tough season for the Boston College Eagles, who find themselves alone at the bottom of the ACC at 1-6 overall and 0-4 in-conference. Their lone win of the season came against FCS Fordham in Week 1–a game that ended in an impressive 66-10 win that cleared the spread by a mile, but looks more and more like a mirage as the team racks up losses to FBS opponents. Week 2 saw the Eagles take a 42-40 loss against Michigan State, covering the spread as 3.5-point underdogs. They're 0-5 against the spread since, most recently falling short as 2.5-point underdogs in their 38-23 loss to Connecticut.

The game was in reach for the first half–the Eagles were up 20-17 at halftime, scoring on four of five drives with two touchdown passes from quarterback Grayson James. That didn't hold up in the second half, during which the Huskies outscored the Eagles 21-3. James completed 16 of 28 passes for 204 yards in the game–his second as a full-time starter after taking over from Thomas Castellanos. He averaged a 57.1 completion percentage and 7.3 yards per attempt, but took seven sacks en route to averaging 1.5 yards on 17 carries. Senior back Jordan McDonald was the standout player on this offense, taking 24 carries–he'd taken only 26 through the team's first six games–for 123 yards and an average of 5.1 per carry.

Boston College ranks 30th in passing yards per game (272.4) among FBS teams, but that's about the only flattering team metric they have going for them–and it may not be worth much for a team two weeks removed from a quarterback change. They're 129th in rushing yards per game (100.1), T-77th in points (27.1), and 126th in points allowed (33.9).

Louisville debuts at No. 19 after upset win at Miami

Just when the AP was ready to write off the Louisville Cardinals, they burst onto the scene with a 24-21 upset win, on the road, against the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes. The Cards had earned votes in each of the first seven weeks of the season–always showing up in the footnotes of the AP Top 25, but never receiving a rank. After falling 30-27 to No. 24 Virginia in Week 7 and not receiving a vote in Week 8, the Cardinals–5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play–debuted on the Week 9 poll at No. 19.

This wasn't a game Louisville stole from Miami–they scored first, went up 14-0 by the end of the first quarter, and never surrendered the lead. Miller Moss completed 23 of 37 passes for 248 yards, averaging a 62.2 completion percentage and 6.7 yards per carry, throwing two touchdowns and running for another. The ground game ran successfully through Isaac Brown, who averaged 7.5 yards while carrying the ball a season-high 15 times. Defensively, the Cardinals picked off Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck four times–including a pick by linebacker T.J. Capers that iced the game with 32 seconds to play–and held the Miami running game to 2.6 yards per carry on 24 attempts despite not sacking Beck once.

Louisville ranks 22nd in passing yards (282.2), T-37th in points (34.0), and 43rd in points allowed (21.0) out of 136 FBS teams heading into Week 9. They're sixth in the ACC standings with only one game left against a team currently ahead of them–they can be a late riser this season if they iron out their ground game.

Boston College vs. Louisville Pick

Spread Pick for BC vs. Louisville

  • Louisville -25.5 (-110) (4 Units)

The Cardinals haven't hit 26-point victory margins in many games this season, but they're 2-1 against the spread since opening their ACC schedule. The Eagles haven't covered since Week 2, when they were 3.5-point underdogs at Michigan State. So far this month, the Eagles have lost 48-7 against Pittsburgh and 41-10 against Clemson, in addition to the 38-23 UConn loss. The lopsided spread didn't come out of nowhere, and the Cardinals are plenty capable of running the Eagles out of the building.

Over/Under Pick for BC vs. Louisville

  • Over 54.5 (-110) (4 Units)

Before clamping down on the Hurricanes' offense, the Cardinals had played three straight games in which 55 or more total points were scored: their 40-17 win over Bowling Green, their 34-27 win over Pittsburgh, and their 27-30 loss to Virginia. The Eagles didn't win in James' second game as the starting quarterback, but they put up 23 points and hit the Team Total Over after three straight games of falling short. I'd expect them to do enough in this game to get over 55 points, given the Cards score 40 or more themselves–like everyone else the Eagles have played in the past month.
