Eagles desperate to break losing run

BC (1-10, 0-7 in ACC) has seen the 2025 spiral badly out of control. The Eagles have lost all 10 of their games against FBS opposition this season, with an opening week blowout over Fordham the sole entry in the team's W column as it sits dead last in the ACC. It is a letdown for BC after finishing 7-6 in 2024 and at .500 in conference play, but it can point to a tough schedule, with their last three losses coming to AP-ranked opposition and holding an SOS ranked at 36th among Division I teams.

The Eagles came close to breaking their long losing streak last time out after pushing No. 16 Georgia Tech all the way at Chestnut Hill.  BC led by 11 points at the end of the third quarter, but the game was turned on its head by three scores from the visitors. Tech eventually clinched with 11 seconds left on the clock with Aidan Birr's third field goal of the game. It was nevertheless a day to remember for Dylan Lonergan who threw for 364 yards and two touchdowns. The redshirt sophomore has picked up 2017 yards in his first season at BC after transferring from Alabama, recording 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. Defense has been the big issue for the Eagles, who rank 134th out of 136 FBS programs with an average of 477.7 yards allowed per game.

Orange finish tough season

Syracuse (3-8, 1-6 in ACC) will hope to at least get some cheer to finish the season after a tough year in upstate New York. The Orange went 3-1 to start 2025, including a marquee win on the road at Clemson, but followed that up with seven straight losses to tumble down the ACC standings, where only Saturday's opponent, Boston College, sits below them with a game left.

Most recently, Syracuse was handled in a 70-7 blowout at the hands of Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish were three scores up before even taking a single offensive snap, thanks to two pick-sixes thrown by Joe Filardi and a punt return TD, and led 35-0 by the end of the first quarter in a huge mismatch. Filardi finished with just 83 passing yards and three INTs, though he did get over the line for Syracuse's only score with seven seconds left on the clock. He is one of three Orange quarterbacks to start games this season, with the trio as a group completing 56.5% of pass attempts and throwing 15 interceptions to 17 touchdowns.

The Orange rank 132nd in D-I football with an average of just 4.3 yards per play, while their mark of 2.1 giveaways per game also places among the worst in the FBS. Wide receivers Emanuel Ross and Justin Ross-Simmons are both marked questionable for Saturday, as is starting RB Yasin Willis.

Boston College vs. Syracuse pick

Spread Pick for Boston College vs. Syracuse

  • BC -3 (5 units)

Something has to give here for these two chronic ACC underperformers and I think BC has enough to finally break its losing run and cover on the road. The Eagles are at least trending in the right direction with a competitive outing against Georgia Tech; Syracuse looks lost on offense and has failed to put up more than 10 points in any of its last three games. This fragile BC defense will certainly benefit from facing one of the Orange's revolving door of QBs, who, between them, average 5.9 yards per pass (125th in FBS); while Lonergan has looked good since returning to the Eagles lineup for the last two games and should spur them to a win.

Take the Eagles.

Over/Under Pick for Boston College vs. Syracuse

  • Over 52.5 (5 units)

Despite Syracuse's offensive deficiencies, I still like the over for this one. BC has been poor in the backfield all year and that should take some of the pressure off for the home team, while the Orange has also been weak on defense, giving up an average of 33.1 ppg in 2025 (126th in D-I). Opposing QBs are completing 67.9% of passes against Syracuse for an average of 243.7 yards per game. The Orange are 3-1 on the over in their last four. BC is 4-1 on the over across its last five games and 7-3-1 for the season as a whole.

Take the over.
