However, Buffalo committed 119 yards in penalties and didn’t secure the victory until its defense stopped UAlbany after the Great Danes reached the one-yard line late in the fourth quarter.

Elijah Holmes completed 26 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in his first career start for Buffalo. Chance Morrow was responsible for all three touchdown receptions, finishing with seven catches, while Messiah Burch led the rushing attack with 74 yards and broke a 47-yard run.

Buffalo deserves credit for finding a way to win, but the Bulls need a cleaner performance in Miami. The penalties were particularly damaging, and the offense averaged only a little more than four yards per play. This will also be Buffalo’s first road game and first matchup against an FBS opponent this season.

FIU Played Better Than Its Final Score

FIU’s 19-9 loss at South Florida is one of those games where the final score doesn’t tell the entire story. The Panthers outgained USF 381-208, generated 19 first downs and held the Bulls to only 100 passing yards and 108 rushing yards. FIU’s defense allowed just 208 total yards, its best performance in that category since October 2024.

JJ Kohl completed 31 of 50 passes for 301 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions. Maguire Anderson led the Panthers with eight receptions for 87 yards, while James Resar caught a 21-yard touchdown pass as time expired. FIU’s biggest problem was turning yardage into points, with three turnovers contributing heavily to the loss.

The Panthers now return to Miami for their home opener, and there is plenty to like about the underlying performance at South Florida. If FIU protects the football and improves in the red zone, the offense should produce considerably more than nine points. Defensively, holding USF to 208 yards gives the Panthers a clear matchup advantage against a Buffalo offense that wasn’t particularly explosive against UAlbany.

FIU -7.5 is my preferred side. Buffalo is the team with the victory, but FIU produced the much stronger statistical performance against significantly better competition. The Panthers outgained South Florida 381-208 and held the Bulls to just 208 total yards, while Buffalo needed a goal-line stand to survive an FCS opponent and committed 119 penalty yards. FIU’s three turnovers distorted the final score in Tampa. With better ball security and home-field advantage, the Panthers have enough of an edge to win this by multiple scores. Take FIU -7.5.

Pick: Under 50.5

The Under 50.5 is my preferred total. FIU’s defense was outstanding in the opener, allowing only 208 yards, while Buffalo scored 21 points against UAlbany and didn’t demonstrate a particularly explosive offensive profile. The Panthers should improve offensively, but their Week 1 problems finishing drives can’t simply be ignored. A game somewhere around 27-17 or 30-17 fits the matchup and keeps us below the number. Take Under 50.5.
