BYU’s Dominant Start Continues with Defensive Mastery

BYU has opened the 2025 season with two decisive victories, outscoring opponents 96-3. The Cougars dismantled FCS Portland State 69-0 in Week 1, followed by a 27-3 win over Stanford. Their defense leads the nation, allowing just 1.5 points per game while ranking first in rushing defense with only 7.0 yards allowed per game. The unit has recorded 5.0 sacks and forced three turnovers, including two interceptions returned for 48 yards. Offensively, quarterback Bear Bachmeier has been efficient, completing 63.2% of passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Running back LJ Martin leads the ground attack with 241 yards on 26 carries, averaging 9.3 yards per rush. The offensive line has been particularly effective, ranking 12th nationally in run push and helping BYU average 312.5 rushing yards per game.

The Cougars have been perfect in the red zone, converting all 12 opportunities into points with seven touchdowns and five field goals. The Cougars have a +4 turnover margin, with zero giveaways in two games. Offensive guard W. Lapuaho and wide receiver T. Nacua are questionable with undisclosed injuries.

East Carolina’s High-Flying Offense Meets Stout BYU Defense

East Carolina rebounded from a season-opening 24-17 loss to NC State with dominant wins over Campbell (56-3) and Coastal Carolina (38-0). Quarterback Katin Houser has been prolific, completing 71.6% of passes for 973 yards and five touchdowns while leading an offense that averages 481.6 total yards per game. The Pirates' passing attack ranks 11th nationally with 346.3 yards per game, led by receiver Anthony Smith's 241 yards on 23 catches.

Defensively, East Carolina has been equally impressive, allowing just 9.0 points per game and recording 8.0 sacks through three contests. The unit has forced 8 turnovers while only committing 1, resulting in a +7 turnover margin that ranks among the best in college football. Special teams have contributed with punter Ryan Leavy averaging 42.3 yards per punt and placing 33% of kicks inside the 20-yard line. The Pirates will be without cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. and tight end Cane Berrong, both lost for the season with torn ACLs.

BYU vs. East Carolina pick

Spread Pick for BYU vs. East Carolina

  • East Carolina Pirates +6.5 (4 Units)

BYU is 2-0 against the spread this season but historically struggles against teams with winning records (0-3 ATS in 2023-24). East Carolina has covered in two of three games, including as a 14-point underdog at NC State. The Pirates are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games, while BYU is 1-4 ATS in its last five as a road favorite. East Carolina’s passing offense (346.3 YPG) matches well against BYU’s secondary, which hasn’t faced an elite QB yet. Go with the Pirates!

Over/Under Pick for BYU vs. East Carolina

  • Over 48.5 (5 Units)

BYU’s games have averaged 49.5 total points this season, while East Carolina’s have averaged 46.0. The over is 3-1 in ECU’s last four home games, with their offense scoring 37.0 PPG. BYU’s defense allows just 1.5 PPG, but East Carolina’s passing attack presents a new challenge. The Pirates have hit the over in 4 of their last 6 against Power 5 opponents. With a low total of 48.5, the over has value given both teams’ offensive efficiency. Go OVER and Good Luck!
