The Wildcats (4-1,1-1) are coming off Saturday’s 41-13 home win against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Before kickoff: NCAAF predictions for BYU Cougars vs. Arizona Wildcats in one clean snapshot.

Cougars Looking to Get Into CFP Picture

The BYU Cougars have not played since last Friday in a home win over the West Virginia Mountaineers 38-24. BYU’s offense dominated as the team scored 38 points on 516 total yards of offense (351 passing, 165 rushing). Quarterback Bear Bachmeier played well as he completed 18-of-25 passes for 351 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception as well as 12 rushes for 43 yards (3.6 yards per carry) with a rushing touchdown. Despite the team stepping up on this side of the ball, they also committed three turnovers (two lost fumbles, one interception).

The defense did enough to get off the field and get stops to win as the Cougars allowed the Mountaineers to score 24 points on 291 total yards (135 passing, 156 rushing). The biggest issue was the fact that West Virginia was 7-for-15 on third downs, but also 0-for-2 on fourth downs. However, the team was able to force two turnovers (two interceptions).

Bachmeier is completing 68.7% of his passes for 1,048 yards with seven passing touchdowns and one interception this season. Running back LJ Martin leads the ground attack with 490 yards (6.4 ypc) and three rushing touchdowns. BYU has been outstanding so far this season as they are 31st in the NCAA with 38.8 points per game. Their defense is allowing 12.2 points per game, which places them tied for sixth in college football. They also allow 239.6 yards per game to rank eighth, and they are excellent in stopping the run, ranking 22nd, allowing 92.2 yards per game. Their offense is clicking as they average 451.8 yards per game.

Wildcats Looking to Dominate at Home

The Arizona Wildcats are looking to continue dominating after last week’s 41-13 home win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Their offense stepped up as they recorded 41 points on 479 total yards of offense (433 passing, 46 rushing) while recording 28 total first downs. Quarterback Noah Fifita excelled by completing 28-of-38 passes for 376 yards with five passing touchdowns to one interception. Their offense averaged only 1.4 yards per rush, though, and made the offense one-dimensional. However, that did not matter as BYU controlled the game.

The defense allowed 13 points on 158 total yards (69 passing, 89 rushing), and the team was 3-for-17 on third downs and 1-for-3 on fourth downs against the Cowboys. The defense forced a pair of turnovers and was able to get off the field as they allowed Oklahoma State to have possession for 25:30. The defense allowed only seven total first downs so they are difficult to overcome.

Fifita is completing 64.6% of his passes for 1,341 yards with 13 passing TDs and three picks this season. RB Ismail Mahdi leads the ground attack with 382 yards (6.0 ypc) and one rushing TD. Arizona has been playing well throughout the first handful of weeks, as they are 50th in the NCAA with 33.2 points per game and are moving the ball down the field, as they are averaging 430.0 yards per game as well. Their defense is giving up just 15.6 points per game, which places them tied for 19th in the country. They also allow 244.8 yards per game to rank 10th, and they are excellent in stopping the pass, being 10th in college football with 147.2 passing yards allowed per game.

BYU Cougars vs. Arizona Wildcats Pick

Spread Pick for BYU vs. Arizona

  • BYU Cougars -125 (5 units)

There is a reason the BYU Cougars are the favorites on the road and a ranked program. The Cougars are averaging an amazing 5.8 yards per carry as a team and it’s going to be difficult for the Wildcats to get to the quarterback and even get tackles for loss. Arizona’s injury report brings some concern for the fact that their secondary is going to be limited against one of the top quarterbacks in college football thus far. Go with the BYU Cougars to win this game and crack the top 15 programs as a result.

Over/Under Pick for BYU vs. Arizona

  • OVER 47.5 (4 units)

These teams have proved the ability to dominate on the offensive side of the football and should be able to click here once again. Both teams move the ball with relative ease as the Cougars are averaging 6.9 yards per play while the Wildcats are recording 6.1 yards per play heading into this matchup. Bachmeier and Fifita have been incredible at passing the football, so drives should be able to continue and find the end zone. All in all, go with OVER 47.5 POINTS in this game as the better bet.
