BYU ranked entering conference play

Though they haven’t faced much resistance, the Cougars have still handled business, owning a 38-point average margin of victory. This will be their first conference matchup. In their first road tilt last weekend, the offense scored in all four quarters while producing 418 yards and 20 first downs. The defense allowed 404 yards and 24 first downs but also forced two turnovers to secure the win.

The BYU offense ranks second among Big 12 teams with an average of 43.3 points per game, 19th best in the nation. They average 453 total yards with a heavy emphasis on the run, where they average 265.7 yards per game, seventh best in the country. LJ Martin has been given the bulk of the load, taking 40 carries for 342 yards. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier has 22 carries for 65 yards and 4 TDs. The Cougars’ passing attack ranks second-to-last in the Big 12 with 186.3 yards per game. Bachmeier has thrown for 518 yards, 4 TDs and has been sacked only four times. Chase Roberts has been his top target, catching 11 passes for 185 yards and a TD.

Allowing an average of only 5.3 points per game, BYU is tied with Ohio State for the best scoring defense in the country. The 205.3 yards per game allowed is the second-best mark in the land, as is the 44.3 rushing yards per game yielded. Versus the pass, the Cougars are giving up 161 yards per game, fourth best among Big 12 defenses. They’ve yet to allow a touchdown and have recorded seven sacks and four interceptions. Linebacker Jack Kelly has gotten into the opposition backfield to pick up three sacks. Evan Johnson is responsible for half of the team’s interceptions, returning one to the house.

Team notes

  • Will Ferrin is a perfect 14-for-14 on PATs and 8-for-8 on FGs, his longest from 56 yards.
  • Cougars are 14th in the nation in time of possession, averaging 33:39 per game.
  • Defense ranks seventh in the country, allowing only 39 first downs.
  • A win would give the team a 4-0 SU start in back-to-back seasons for only the second time in program history.

Colorado offense puffs its chest

The Buffaloes have alternated a loss with a win through their first four games, leaving them 0-1 SU in conference play in the process. The offense had a big day against Wyoming, scoring 21 points in the second quarter to set the tone. They finished with 497 yards and 23 first downs in the win. On the defensive side, the Buffs held Wyoming to 347 yards and got a turnover out of them.

Through their first four games, the Colorado offense averaged 375 yards and 27 yards per game. They are seventh in the Big 12 in passing, averaging 233.8 yards per game. After being benched the week prior, Kaidon Salter responded by throwing for 304 yards and rushing for 86 while scoring four touchdowns. The senior has thrown for 565 yards and 4 TDs, and he’s rushed for a team-high 153 yards and 3 TDs. Salter connected with running backs on 20 passes. The running game is producing 141.3 yards per game, 14th in the Big 12. Micah Welch and Simeon Price each rushed for 143 yards. The offensive line has allowed nine sacks to date.

On defense, the Buffs have given up 409.3 yards per game, second most by any Big 12 defense. They’ve also allowed 22.5 points per game, 13th in the conference. Opponents are running them over to the tune of 194.5 yards per game, the 14th-worst rushing defense in the country. Their passing defense is yielding 214.8 yards per game, and Colorado has two interceptions and six sacks. Eleven different players have more than 10 tackles for the Buffalos, with safety Tawfiq Byard’s 25 leading the team. Defensive ends Keaten Wade and Arden Walker each have 1.5 sacks.

Team notes

  • Salter was an honorable mention for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week following his performance versus East Carolina.
  • Starting LT Jordan Seaton, who left last week‘s game with an injury, is questionable for this game.
  • Tied for 13th in the nation with three fumble recoveries.
  • Special teams have one blocked kick and one blocked punt to their credit.

BYU vs. Colorado Picks

Spread Pick for BYU vs. Colorado

  • BYU -6.5 (5 units)

This is the 14th meeting between the programs and Colorado owns an 8-4-1 SU record in the series. These two finished their 2024 campaigns against each other in the Valero Alamo Bowl, a game won by the Cougars, 36-14. The Buffs had a lot of their star players sit that one out, so their lineup is similar in the rematch. Their two wins have been against non-power conference opponents which seems to instill some false hope in the team and the fanbase. Against good defenses, they’ve failed to get either side of their offense rolling and now they are facing one of the best defenses in the country. The Cougars are going to stuff the Buffaloes at the line, and Salter will be forced out of the pocket. While sometimes that works out well for the Colorado QB, the BYU defense is too quick to get completely burned by it. On the other side, Bachmeier should be able to take advantage of his legs in this one and I expect BYU to once again roll on the ground.

Take the Cougars giving the points.

Over/Under Pick for BYU vs. Colorado

  • Under 48 (4 units)

When these two met in the Alamo Bowl, they combined for 50 points to hit under against a 54.5-point total. The Colorado offense has been off and on so far, but they have not fared well in its two games against power conferences. The 25th-ranked Cougars bring to the table a staunch defense that over three games, has allowed just 16 total points. They apply tons of pressure up front and if they force Salter outside, they have the second-best run defense in the country to handle things. BYU’s offense has been able to move the ball well thus far, but on the road in their first Big 12 game of the season, I expect them to be a little tighter. The under is 4-3 in the seven games played by these two teams this season.

Take the under.
