There’s a whale of a game in the Big 12 this weekend, as the #7 BYU Cougars (8-0, 5-0 B12) square off against the #8 Texas Tech Red Raiders (8-1, 5-1 B12) in a top-10 clash. We’ve got you covered with our BYU vs. Texas Tech prediction. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 ET from Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, TX. Looking to win big this football season? We have the best College Football Picks to help you out!

#7 Cougars Coming Off Of a Bye at 8-0

Coach Kalani Sitake has developed this BYU Cougars program into a contender on the national stage, and now that they’re a part of a conference, they’re beginning to gain some attention from the national media. BYU is still undefeated this season at 8-0, with their most notable wins coming over #23 Utah (24-21) and Iowa State (41-27), more recently. The ISU win was on October 25th, so the Cougs will be coming off of a bye this weekend. From a sports betting perspective, BYU has gone 6-2 ATS, and they’ve split their totals 4-4 to the over/under.

In terms of personnel, it’s freshman QB Bear Bachmeier leading the offense this season. He has thrown for 1,693 yards on a 62.7% completion rate, adding 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also has 408 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, but RB LJ Martin is the top back with 789 yards and five touchdowns. Martin (undisclosed) is dealing with an injury, but is listed as probable. Out wide, WRs Chase Roberts (591 yards, 4 TD) and Parker Kingston (516 yards, 4 TD) are the main targets in the passing game.

  • BYU is priced at +320 to win the Big 12 title, while sitting at +12000 to win the national championship.
  • Offensively, the Cougars are scoring 31.6 points per game (36th), while averaging 409.0 yards per week (42nd).
  • Defensively, they are 19th in the country this year, conceding 19.4 points per game. They’re allowing 356.4 yards per contest, which is 49th.

#8 Red Raiders Cruise Past Wildcats

Meanwhile, Coach Joey McGuire and his Texas Tech Red Raiders have big aspirations as well this season. They’re 8-1, with their lone blemish coming on the road against Arizona State (26-22) in a game where Tech was without its starting quarterback. They’ve since bounced back with a pair of wins, hammering both Oklahoma State (42-0) and Kansas State (43-20), more recently. The Red Raiders enter the weekend at 8-1 ATS and 5-4 to the under.

Starting quarterback Behren Morton is healthy and should be suiting up again this weekend. He has thrown for 1,750 yards on a 67.9% completion rate, adding 15 touchdowns and four picks. His top target is WR Caleb Douglas, who has 41 catches for 594 yards and four touchdowns. RB Cameron Dickey spearheads the rushing attack, and he has 746 yards and 10 touchdowns on 134 totes (5.6 YPC).

  • The Red Raiders are a -170 favorite to win the Big 12 championship, while sitting at +2000 to win it all.
  • Texas Tech’s offense has been unstoppable this season, ranking third in scoring (40.6 PPG), while putting up 467.1 yards per game (12th).
  • On the defensive side, the Red Raiders are fifth this season, allowing 14.0 points per game. In terms of yardage, they’re 10th, conceding 282.6 yards per contest.

BYU vs. Texas Tech Pick

Spread Pick for BYU vs. Texas Tech

  • BYU Cougars +10.5 (-115) (5 units)

This spread is a complete headscratcher to me. At most, I’d say Texas Tech should be around a 6.5-point favorite due to home field advantage. And even then, I’d still consider a flier on BYU with the points. I honestly think they’re live to win outright.

BYU has given us no reason to doubt them, and they’ve passed every test along the way. They’re also coming off of a bye week, so the extra week of prep and time to heal is worth something as well. The Cougars will roll with a freshman quarterback, but turnovers haven’t been an issue at all this season. In fact, the Cougs are second in the country in turnover margin per game (+1.4) this season. This is going to be a physical game between two top-tier programs, and there’s just no way that I can pass up on double digits with a BYU squad that I believe is a legit contender.

Over/Under Pick for BYU vs. Texas Tech

  • Under 52.5 (-110) (5 units)

This total is about right, but I still think it’s best to play the under. I can easily see this one ending in the 27-24 range. These are two run-first teams, as BYU ranks 28th in rushing play percentage (57.2%), while Tech is 63rd (52.3%). Interestingly, Texas Tech’s rushing defense is literally second-to-none, allowing only 77.3 rushing yards per game.

This leads me to believe that BYU’s defense is going to have to step up to keep their team in the game. They should be up for the task, as they’re allowing only 19.4 points per game this season. And on a personal note, I just don’t think Texas Tech has truly been tested this season. They’ve had the 73rd-toughest schedule thus far, and this will easily be their biggest challenge so far. As I mentioned, it’s going to be a war, and I think points will be tough to come by. Give me the under.
