California sleeps on opponent and pays
Things were all well and dandy for the Golden Bears, who rattled off three straight wins to open the season before crumbling on the road last weekend. The offense was held off the scoreboard for the first time since 2019 in a game where they were two-touchdown favorites. Cal’s offense went for 289 total yards, 17 first downs and they turned the ball over three times. The defense allowed San Diego State to gain 321 yards in the loss.
Following the shutout, Cal’s offense now averages 24 points with 363 total yards per game. Their passing attack is producing 257.8 yards per game, while the offensive line has allowed eight sacks. Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele was 17-38 for 208 yards and two interceptions in last Saturday’s loss. He is eighth among ACC quarterbacks with 988 passing yards, completing 61.1% of his passes for 6 TDs and 3 INTs. Four players have at least 13 catches and Jacob De Jesus has been Sagapolutele’s top target and is tied for fourth in the ACC with 20 receptions for 184 yards. The Bears have handed the ball off 120 times and average 105.3 rushing yards per game and 3.5 yards per carry. Kendrick Raphael has 228 yards and a touchdown on 50 carries.
The 34 points allowed by the defense last weekend were 19 more than any other game this season. On the year, they are allowing 16.5 points, fourth in the ACC, and 290.3 total yards per game, fifth in the conference. They have the fourth-best rushing defense among ACC teams, allowing 9.4 rushing yards per game and 3.2 yards per game. Versus the pass, they are allowing 195.5 yards per game while adding six sacks and three interceptions to the effort. Cade Uluava leads the team with 34 tackles and fellow linebacker Luke Ferrelli is on his heels with 33. Hezekiah Masses is responsible for all three of the team's interceptions to go with six passes defended.

Boston College looks for bounce back after bye
The Eagles got a week away from competitive football to shake off the stink of back-to-back losses. They were tied with Stanford at halftime in their last action but were unable to score in the second half, despite the defense holding their opponent to 10 points. Boston College’s offense had 389 yards on the day but only 56 via its ground game. The defense held Stanford to 15 first downs but also allowed 399 yards, 213 on the ground.
The Boston College offense is fifth among ACC offenses with 467 total yards and fourth with 42 points per game. They have the top passing attack in the conference, averaging 393.7 yards through the air each game. Dylan Lonergan completed 68.2% of his passes versus Stanford for 33 yards, one touchdown and his first interception of the season. He threw 4 TDs in each of his first two starts and the sophomore is tied for second in the ACC with a 73.2% completion rate. The Eagles have the worst rushing offense in the ACC and fifth-worst in the country, averaging 73.3 yards per game and 2.5 yards per carry. Turbo Richard is the team’s leading rusher with 158 yards, though he hasn’t had more than 55 in any game. The offensive line has yielded four sacks.
On defense, the Eagles are giving up 27.3 points, sixth worst in the ACC, and 315.7 total yards per game, the seventh best mark in the conference. Opponents average 126 rushing yards per game and 3.8 yards per carry against the B.C. defense. They have the sixth-best passing defense in the ACC, allowing 189.7 yards per game. The Eagles have just one interception but have reached the opposing QB eight times for a sack. Eight different players each have one sack apiece, including Omar Thornton who is tied with fellow defensive back KP Price for the team lead with 20 tackles.

California vs. Boston College Picks
Spread Pick for California vs. Boston College
- California +6.5 (5 units)
These two teams have faced off only once in the past, a 1986 tilt won by Boston College at home. Of course, Cal has the honor of having to travel across the entire country for this one, but at least the kickoff isn’t at Noon local time. They need to come out with some fire to show that last week’s upset loss was just an anomaly. The Golden Bears have a subtly good rushing offense, which they should utilize. Boston College will allow them the luxury of the run and if Cal can establish that, they can control the tempo. The Eagles' offense relies heavily on the pass. The Golden Bears are pretty good at defending against the air attack and they also put bodies in the backfield. Lonergan is not a mobile quarterback so with the pocket starting to collapse around the B.C. quarterback, Cal should be able to stay within striking distance at the very least.
Take the Golden Bears getting the points.
Over/Under Pick for California vs. Boston College
- Over 52.5 (4 units)
This matchup features a pair of offenses averaging over 24 points apiece, and a pair of defenses that are allowing 16.5 points or more each game. There is concern with Cal’s offense after they got blanked by San Diego State last weekend. They gave up 34 points, so I would expect B.C. to get a good number of points against them and prior to that game, they scored at least 27 points in each of their first three games. Boston College should allow the Golden Bears to get their running game going, which will help them get into scoring position. The Eagles’ passing game has been very strong thus far. Cal has a solid passing defense, but Boston College should be able to move the ball against them. It is expected to be a very pleasant autumn day in Boston, so weather won’t be a factor. Between the two teams, the over is 5-2 this season
Take the over.
