California vs Syracuse Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 12 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 09/08/2026, 02:10 AM ET

The California Golden Bears travel to the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York, to face the Syracuse Orange on Saturday, September 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET in the ACC opener for both programs. California enters 0-1 after losing 45-24 to UCLA, while Syracuse is 1-0 following a dominant 66-3 victory over New Hampshire. The early betting market has California favored by 1.5 points. Before placing your wagers, check out our free college football picks for more predictions throughout the season.

California Needs to Fix Its Run Defense

California showed some offensive promise in its opener but couldn't slow UCLA in a 45-24 defeat. The biggest problem was defending the ground game, as the Golden Bears surrendered 277 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele completed 24 of 41 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions and dealt with consistent pressure. Cal's offensive line must provide better protection against a Syracuse defense that produced five sacks in its opener.

The Golden Bears did generate some defensive pressure and recorded an interception, but the tackling and run defense have to improve substantially. Syracuse demonstrated enough balance in Week 1 to exploit the same weaknesses UCLA exposed.

Syracuse Explodes for 66 Points

Syracuse couldn't have asked for much more from its opener, crushing New Hampshire 66-3 and taking a 41-0 advantage into halftime. The Orange dominated on offense, defense and special teams.

Steve Angeli looked sharp in his return from injury, completing 20 of 29 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns. Umari Hatcher caught eight passes for 147 yards and two scores, while Shavane Anderson Jr. and Tylik Hill combined for 192 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Syracuse also produced five sacks and 11 tackles for loss. The main negative was discipline, with the Orange committing 12 penalties for 130 yards. Those mistakes become considerably more dangerous against an ACC opponent.

California vs Syracuse Picks and Prediction

Pick: Syracuse +1.5

I'm willing to take the home underdog with Syracuse +1.5. California allowed 45 points and 277 rushing yards against UCLA, while Syracuse demonstrated excellent offensive balance in its opener. Angeli's return also appears to have transformed an offense that struggled badly without him last season. Cal is considerably stronger than New Hampshire, but asking the Golden Bears to win on the road after their defensive problems in Week 1 is difficult. Take Syracuse +1.5.

Pick: Over 57.5

If the total is set around 57.5, the Over is my target. Cal surrendered 45 points in its opener but also scored 24, while Syracuse produced 66 behind an efficient passing game and productive rushing attack. The Golden Bears should create much more offensive resistance than New Hampshire did. A game around 31-28 or 34-27 clears the number. Take Over 57.5 if available.

Final Picks: Syracuse +1.5 and Over 57.5
